Online Degrees in HVAC

Degrees in HVAC: Heating, ventilation and air conditioning is a very popular choice for education. This is an offshoot of mechanical engineering, and both of these career paths offer terrific job security, high pay and geographical mobility. You will be expected to install, repair, and maintain the heating and air conditioning units in private homes, large buildings or even factories. You will also need to have knowledge relating to building codes and environmental safety as well. If you feel that this is a degree you would like to pursue, look through the form at the right to help you find information about available degree programs.

If you enjoy working with mechanics, and enjoy both intellectual and physical challenges, then this degree program may be exactly what you need for job satisfaction. Most employers will usually require at least a certification degree, so you really need to invest in your education in this field.

HVAC Degree Levels Available Online

  • Undergraduate/Graduate Certificate: 1 year to complete

  • Associate Degree: 2 years to complete

  • Bachelor's Degree: 4 years to complete

  • Master's Degree: 1-3 years to complete

  • Doctorate Degree: 4-6 years to complete

Most people may only decide to achieve their undergraduate certification credentials, because it is the quickest way to get your education and find a good job. This type of course usually lasts a year, is less expensive than a regular degree, and will train you in the actual coursework you will need to know at work. In addition to the online HVAC programs, you may also be able to study additional avenues in this field at the same time. An Associate's degree will require you to fulfill your general education requirements in Math, Science, English and the Humanities in addition to your HVAC courses.

Those who desire a higher degree in HVAC may move onto a Bachelor's degree program. Although you will still be expected to complete any outstanding general education classes, you will also be able to delve deeply into any of the categories in the HVAC coursework. This could include mechanical engineering, chemistry or cooling systems, computer applications and much more. A Bachelor's degree may be required by some employers, particularly for those who intend to enter management positions.

A Master's degree in HVAC may fall under another category, such as engineering. As a graduate student, you will probably be expected to complete independent research and will need to choose an area of specialty. You may end up in administration, marketing, development or research with this degree.

Very few programs, if any offer a Doctorate degree in HVAC itself, but may offer a Doctorate in mechanical engineering or mechanical chemistry. Depending upon your career aspirations, you may be able to use this degree to work in government facilities, for state funded programs, as a business owner, or in product development. Online doctoral degree programs may be the only option you have if you wish to try to obtain a doctorate in HVAC.

Admission Requirements

Some of the more universal requirements for acceptance into a program usually include:

  • High school diploma or GED

  • Letter of recommendation or intent

  • ACT/SAT scores

  • Previous education transcripts

Each program will have its specific requirements, which may include work history, background check, age requirements or even a competency test. In addition, graduate schools will often require an application as well as GRE scores. Always look over a school's admission policies to give you ample time to round up your documentation.

Online HVAC vs. Traditional Programs

Trying to go to school while holding down a job is tough, but many people have found that online courses allow them to keep their day job and get their education in their free time. Some of the advantages include fewer traveling expenses, ease of scheduling and even lower course costs. However, not everyone has the learning style, the software or computer knowledge to learn online. You will need to carefully examine every aspect of the online courses to be sure that it is the right fit for you. Whichever route you choose, the job opportunities in this field will only continue to grow, and you need to make the right investment in yourself and in your career.

Tuition and Accreditation

It can be frustrating trying to figure out how much your tuition may cost you for an HVAC program, simply because no two programs are alike. Your certification program could cost between $4,000 and $16,000 depending on where you go to school. You may need to factor in out of state tuition, your books, your traveling expenses and incidental fees as well. However, by searching through several HVAC degree programs you will be able to get a general average amount of tuition rates. In addition, the quality of your education should be factored right along with the tuition costs.

Accreditation is absolutely necessary. Without it, your diploma or degree may be worth nothing to other schools or an employer. Check a school's credentials very carefully and also research the agency that did the accreditation. This will give you an idea as to whether or not the program and course is legitimate or slightly shady. By preparing yourself to ask the right questions, you will find the answers you need and can attend an affordable and reputable university.

Choosing the Best HVAC Degree

Not everyone can say what their long term career goals are, which can make it hard to know what level of education is right for your job. However, by making sure that you get a practical and versatile education, you are ensuring that your knowledge can cross over to other disciplines if needed. If you intend to head up a research team, you will need a higher education. However, if you want to train in HVAC and own your own business, you may only wish to attend a certification program or get your Bachelor's degree. By factoring in the cost of your education, the expected earnings and your career path, you may be able to make good decisions that can help you the rest of your life.
