A Career in Interior Design

An interior professional provides services encompassing research, development, and implementation of plans and designs of interior environments to improve the quality of life, increase productivity, and protect the health, safety and welfare of the public. The interior design process follows a systematic and coordinated methodology that is part of the course of study leading to completion of the requirements for a bachelor’s degree in interior design.

Importance of Aesthetic Design
Analysis and integration of compiled information into the creative process result in an appropriate interior environment. With proper interior work, businesses may improve marketability and attract desired clientele. A competent interior designer may help to increase profits by creating an aesthetic environment that makes customers feel welcome and comfortable, enhancing their desire to browse longer and purchase additional products. After all, customers are more likely to return to a pleasant, inviting place, rather than one in which no care or interior planning and design has been considered.

Interior decorators are skilled in a number of disciplines and may ultimately decide to specialize in one of them. In the past, their main job was to plan and decorate a space by selecting and coordinating colors of fabrics for window coverings, furniture, paint, artwork and other items that ultimately create the desired effect. But today’s designers wear a multitude of hats and, accordingly, are held to a stricter standard. Therefore, in some locations, interior designers are licensed by the state.

Among the tasks that may also be performed by interior designers are the following:
  • Working with contractors on renovations or new construction to add architectural details, such as built-in bookcases and crown molding, and to help in planning of windows, stairways, escalators, elevators and other layout considerations in malls, airports, libraries, hospitals, public buildings, hotels, cruise ship staterooms and public areas, and other spaces, as well as in private residences.

  • Collaborating with contractors to plan safe designs to accommodate those who are disabled, and to aid in making sure that the planned layout is properly constructed as far as meeting fire safety and construction codes.

  • Giving input to architects, electricians, plumbers, carpenters and others to insure that the design meets the requirements, preferences and budget of the building’s intended occupants.

Interior designers must be astute at reading architectural blueprints; knowledgeable about fire, safety and building codes; well-schooled on the psychology of the impact and combination of specific colors; skilled at assessing size, dimensions and placement of items in a design space; effective at communicating clearly with clients and construction personnel; and able to accurately record and retrieve design details and documents. These and other skills are taught interior design students during their courses of study in an accredited online degree program.

Approximately a quarter of all interior designers are self-employed; and competition for jobs is stiff. This field draws a number of talented professionals; however, those who complete additional education and certification and who continue to develop their interior design skills should rise above the crowd and find success in this a stimulating and exciting career.
