A Career in Educational Administration
Education administrators set educational standards and goals and establish the policies and procedures to achieve them while also supervising managers, support staff, teachers, counselors, librarians, coaches, and other employees. They are also responsible for the development of academic programs, monitoring students, educational progress, training and motivating teachers and other staff. They also manage career counseling and other student services, administer recordkeeping, prepare budgets, and perform many other duties. They handle relations with parents, prospective and current students, employers, and the community. In an organization such as a small day care center, one administrator may handle all these functions. In universities or large school systems, responsibilities are divided among many administrators, each with a specific function.

An Educational administrator who manages elementary, middle, and secondary schools is called a principal. They are in charge of and set the academic tone and actively work with teachers to develop and maintain high curriculum standards, develop mission statements, and set performance goals and objectives. Principals consult with staff to counsel, clarify, or answer routine questions. They will hire, evaluate, and help improve the skills of teachers and other staff. They also visit classrooms, examine teaching methods, review instructional objectives, and study learning materials. Principals must use clear, purposeful guidelines for teacher appraisals, because pay is often based on the individuals performances.

Principals also interact with other administrators, as well as students and parents. The authority to make decisions has progressively shifted from school district central offices directly to individual schools. School principals have greater flexibility in implementing school policies and setting goals, however when making administrative decisions they must be aware of the concerns of parents, teachers, and other community members.
