Early Childhood Education

Early childhood education specialists are among the first educators of young children; and a broad understanding of the biological, emotional and developmental makeup of children and their interactions within society are crucial to properly caring for and serving this age group.

"Early childhood" generally refers to children from birth to pre-puberty and includes those in preschool, kindergarten and elementary school. A college degree or professional certificate in early childhood education or childhood development is recommended, and even required, for most positions as day care, preschool and elementary school administrators; daycare providers; preschool teachers; and teachers' aides.

College instruction includes parent-child relationships; parenting practices; special needs of children; parental and environmental influences on child development; external support services; and related public policy issues. Students develop a solid foundation in the theory and practice of effective childcare, with coursework in child growth and development, including child psychology.

Online classes in early childhood education are designed to prepare students for the multifaceted task of guiding, educating, disciplining and motivating young children. Students will learn to develop patience and creativity in planning their teaching curriculum and activities; and they will study proven techniques for engaging children through games, art, music, academics, play time, physical exercises, computers and more. Communication skills are particularly honed, as graduates will be required to interact with other teachers, aides, parents and community members, along with a classroom full of energetic and active youngsters.

Teachers and aides are usually required pass a background check, undergo a mental health evaluation and physical exam, and be fingerprinted as a condition of employment. Also, early childhood education professionals are expected to follow ethics and safety guidelines in order to maintain accountability and insure the safety of each child. Credentialed teachers are required to meet the ongoing licensure requirements of their state.

In addition to the required coursework for an early childhood education degree or certificate, students may find it helpful to take continuing education courses in computers, information technology, fine arts, business and foreign languages.
