Office Management Degree Programs

The position of office manager entails a number of different duties ranging from administrative to clerical. An individual who attains this position may find themselves tasked with a number of duties ranging from paralegal support to drafting correspondence and even scheduling appointments. These individuals may also be responsible for certain aspects of human resources and are often some of the most valuable people in the office environment since they keep a business running smoothly and efficiently. Acquiring one of these positions requires an individual to have received the proper training, sometimes through work experience, but more often through a secondary education.

An individual interested in a career as an office administrator or manager should consider earning a degree in this field. Even if a person already has a degree in business, they may want to consider returning to school so that they can advance their education and make themselves even more attractive to the employer they already have or potential employers at new companies. Whether an individual is looking for a new job or simply wants to advance where they are, earning a degree is an excellent way to increase one's earning potential.

Office Administration and Management Degree Levels Available Online

  • Undergraduate/Graduate Certificate: 1 year to complete

  • Associate Degree: 2 years to complete

  • Bachelor's Degree: 4 years to complete

  • Master's Degree: 1-3 years to complete

  • Doctorate Degree: 4-6 years to complete

An individual may be tempted to simply earn an undergraduate/graduate certificate since it is an affordable alternative to spending two years in college in order to earn an Associate's degree, but a certificate generally leaves a person eligible only for entry-level positions. Likewise, an Associate's degree is often only acceptable to employers if the individual client for the position also has a number of years of work experience to go along with it. In most cases, employers prefer to hire individuals who have at least a bachelor's degree when they are trying to fill an office administrator or management position.

A person who already has a bachelor's degree may want to take a closer look at furthering their education by return to school and earning a Masters or doctorate degree. A person who already holds a bachelors degree can earn their Masters degree in one of three years if they attend classes full-time. A doctorate degree will take an additional 4 to 6 years to complete for a bachelors degree holder. Of course, a person who is working full-time may find it difficult, if not impossible, to attend full-time classes which will mean that it will take them considerably longer to earn their degree.

An individual who has yet to attend a college or university should understand that most associate degree programs cover the basics of this type of position while also providing an individual with a well-rounded general education that can include a number of topics ranging from basic mathematics to history, English, communication, and more.

Admission Requirements

The admission requirements for undergraduate programs in office management and administration are fairly similar for most universities. In order to enroll an individual will have to have:

  • High school diploma

  • SAT/ACT scores

  • Letters of recommendation

  • Personal statement/essays

Enrolling a Masters or doctorate program may also mean that an individual will need to meet additional requirements such as work experience, a portfolio of accomplishments, letters of recommendation, and a transcript which proves that the individual maintained the minimum requirements regarding GPA during their previous education. Because every college and university is different, the actual requirements for graduate courses will vary somewhat from one school to the next.

Online Office Administration and Management Programs vs. Traditional College

Choosing between online classes or conventional campus classes at a local university is a decision that many nontraditional students face. Although attending classes on campus is the tried-and-true approach to earning an education, more and more individuals are choosing to earn their education online because it offers greater flexibility when it comes to their schedule. The simple fact is that online classes represent a huge leap forward when it comes to convenience. For example, an individual that is working full-time or who find themselves with family obligations that would make campus classes difficult may be able to earn their degree from the comfort of their own home by attending classes online.

Of course, before an individual chooses online classes they should understand that it may be necessary for them to attend certain classes in a traditional classroom environment. It is also worth noting that individuals who have a high level of self-motivation tend to do better since attending online classes puts more of the responsibility on the student. A person who knows that they have a better chance of excelling with a structure that comes from a more traditional campus environment may be better off taking that route rather than earning their degree online.

Tuition and Accreditation

Every school and every program is different, but an undergraduate program can cost anywhere from $9000-$40,000 a year. More prestigious schools may cost a substantial amount more, but rarely are programs less expensive than this. A person who is interested in enrolling in a graduate program may spend even more money on tuition. Understanding the costs associated with the degree is important since it will allow a person to make the necessary plans in order to cover the expense of earning their degree.

An important factor that many individuals overlook is the accreditation of the school that they are attending. The vast majority of both online and brick-and-mortar schools are credited either nationally or regionally. A school may also offer programs that have been accredited by body that specialize in a particular subject. A person should be aware, however, that some schools are not properly accredited and there are even those that do not have any accreditation whatsoever. Schools that do not have the proper accreditation should be avoided at all costs since an individual who attends such a college may find that their degree holds little weight.
