DIALYSIS TECHNICIAN PROGRAMS

Online Dialysis Technician Degrees

For those entering the medical field there are plenty of different decisions. Online education has made it easier than ever to get started in the medical field, and earning an online dialysis technician degree is an excellent way to take on a clinical role helping others. The demand for these professionals is expected to increase over the future and employment in hospitals, clinics, and dialysis centers are available around the country. Those enrolling in the program can let it lead them to a full time career as a dialysis technician or they can use it as a foundation and add experience and additional training in order to move their career forward. The simple fact is that there are plenty of different options available for students to pursue.

Earning this degree will qualify students to attend to patients who need dialysis treatments. They will help answer questions, set up the dialysis machines, compete the process, and more. Dialysis centers, hospitals, and physician offices are the more common employers but some also work in home based programs for those in need of it. Students can enroll in online training programs and earn a degree but will have to complete additional hands-on clinical duty in order to graduate the program. Online options for education are popular because they allow students to enroll and complete the majority of the program from home so that they can move their career forward even while holding down a job or juggling a busy schedule.

Online Dialysis Technician Degrees

  • Certificate program:  6 months to complete

  • Diploma program: 1 year to complete

  • Associate degree: 2 years to complete

Obviously a certificate program is the first type of education option that most look at since it takes such little time to complete. Over the course of this program students will learn things like the physiology of the kidneys, the process of monitoring vital signs, and the steps taken to help support patients and their families. Students also learn the basics of the procedure and will learn how to complete the preparation procedures, operation of dialysis machines, maintenance of the machines, and more. It's the fast track into the field and covers all of the basics that will be involved in the job.

The one year diploma program is probably the more popular option since it covers all of the things a certificate program will but then goes much further than that. Students learn all of the concepts surrounding kidney disease and basic dialysis but then master the different subjects needed to perform the dialysis process. Lab work, machine operation, medical terminology, kidney physiology, vital sign monitoring, maintenance of machines, support therapy, and more are all covered to help students become the best they can be at their job.

An associate program allows students to gain an even greater understanding of the field and will also set up a student for the chance to further their careers. Anatomy, physiology, renal nutrition, medial office practice, and much more are all covered in the program and students can use this program to move their career forward to much greater levels than would be possible with the other types of degree options.

It's important to note that each of these options is of the highest quality and will qualify students for work in most dialysis centers. The online programs and traditional ones will both culminate with clinical duty or externships. Essentially, students will have to work at dialysis centers alongside licensed professionals and master the skills needed to effectively administer dialysis treatments.

Admission Requirements

Most online dialysis technician degrees will require little more than a high school diploma. SAT scores may be required and pre-entrance assessment exams could be required as well. The entrance requirements into an associate's degree program will be much more stringent than the requirements for a certificate program. Taking health and science oriented classes during high school will greatly help with not only admissions but with the education process in general once accepted.

Traditional and Online Dialysis Technician Degrees Key Differences

There are very few differences between traditional and online dialysis technician degrees. Essentially the only difference is that in online programs the basic coursework will be completed at home and over the internet while traditional programs involve regular visits to the classes at a campus. Both will require hands on training in a dialysis center before the student can graduate as well, and the duration of this practicum will vary depending on the school and the program. Those who are motivated and disciplined but who have busy schedules will find that an online degree is right for them. Those who need regular guidance to stay on track should consider a traditional program to ensure that they complete the class on time. Both are excellent options for your future.

Tuition Information

Tuition costs will depend largely upon the school attended and the type of program enrolled in. Those enrolling in certificate programs will pay between one and two thousand for the program. Diploma programs cost around four thousand dollars and those enrolling in an associate degree program will pay 4,000 to 7,000 dollars per year for their education. Depending on the school and the type of program there may be financing options and financial aid available.

Accreditation Considerations

Accreditation is absolutely vital when you're selecting your dialysis program. Most schools are accredited by the ACICS - the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools. Those that have regional accreditation will be even more highly respected since this accreditation is regarded by many as the gold standard of accreditations. No matter what type of program you're considering, be sure that you spend the time to determine exactly which type of accreditation a school holds.

Finding the Right Degree

The first step in finding the right degree is figuring out what you want from your career. Entry level positions can be obtained quickly through a certificate program, while earning diplomas can lead to a better position and better pay. And taking the time to earn an associate's degree will help you even further and will also set you up for the chance to continue your education if you desire to do so. Basically, take a minute to figure out where you want your career to go, which degree matches it, and make your decision based on this.
