Online Computer Networking Degrees

Online Computer Network Degree: Computer networking is the engineering discipline concerned with communication between computer systems or devices. Networks, routers, routing protocols, and networking over the public Internet have their specifications defined in documents called RFCs. Computer networking is sometimes considered a sub-discipline of telecommunications, computer science, information technology and/or computer engineering. Computer networks rely heavily upon the theoretical and practical application of these scientific and engineering disciplines.

Computer Networking

Groundbreaking developments in technology continue to sculpt and shape the field of computer networking and telecommunications, which focuses upon the data networks and operating systems that are vital to the transmission of information along intricate systems of wires, cables, and electricity. Known as the ‘Information Highway’, this wired and wireless exchange of information relies upon the expertise of well-trained networking professionals with a solid foundation in computer science, electronics, information systems, engineering, data communications, or network operating systems.

Voice, video, and data are the three major types of telecommunication that involve shared communication over distance. Individuals utilize computer networks in the widespread telecommunications system when they send an e-mail, text someone, make a telephone call, use specific multimedia phone features, send a fax, or connect to the Internet. Businesses particularly depend upon computer networking to aid in marketing, communication with customers, inventory control, personnel management, and visibility. And high above the earth, an assortment of jet planes, satellites, and space stations transmit information signals that are read and deciphered by a receiver somewhere on earth. So whether texting someone in the same room, or communicating via webcam with a group of people overseas, high-tech computer networks are powerful tools that work 24/7 to insure reliability, accuracy and convenience for all involved parties.

A high-tech team of computer networking specialists is essential to the smooth operation of a global, multi-billion dollar infrastructure that supports all of the fundamental operations of business, government, and banking services. The flow of a sea of sensitive information has spurred a cottage industry of computer security professionals who oversee the safety issues that all too often, grace the front page of the newspapers. Although most computer-related degrees include some training in this area, computer security is also a specialty that can be accessed through additional coursework beyond a computer science degree.

Computer scientists research, invent, design, and problem-solve at the highest levels of computer networking. Network systems analysts and architects assess, test, analyze the Internet, local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), and any of the extensive data communication systems, along with their hardware, software, or other components. Engineers implement the designs and structural integrity devised by a team of telecommunications professionals; and they also work as consultants during the planning process. Others with related college degrees, including some with vocational training, act as the massive nuts and bolts support community that enables the information network to serve its massive body of clients.
