Students must complete all general education requirements, the courses and credits listed below and additional free electives to total a minimum of 122 semester hours, including a writing intensive course (W), foreign language and physical education.
Requirement
The English Department core (18 S.H.) plus the requirements for one of five options chosen by the student.
1. General Writing: requires ENG 270 Basic News Writing; ENG 442 Text, Image, Desktop Production., ENG 333 The Editorial Environment; six other professional writing courses; ENG 465 Thesis Project. Students must have an overall G.P.A. of 2.5 or better in courses used to satisfy the major requirements.
2. Creative Writing: requires ENG 442 Text, Image, Desktop Production; ENG 465 Thesis Project and eight writing courses selected from among six creative writing workshops; ENG 462 The Book; ENG 339 The Creative Essay; ENG 271 Human Interest Writing, and ENG 315 Critical Methods. Students must have an overall G.P.A. of 2.5 or better in courses used to satisfy the major requirements.
3. Professional Writing - Business: requires ENG 270 Basic New Writing; ENG 442 Text, Image, Desktop Production; ENG 333 The Editorial Environment; ENG 245 Technical Writing; ENG 335 Fact-Based Opinion Writing; ENG 338 Writing About Specialized Subjects or ENG/JLA 321 Legal Writing; ENG 340 Public Relations Writing or ENG 255 Advertising, Copywriting; two other professional writing courses; ENG 465 Thesis Project. Students must have an overall G.P.A. of 2.5 or better in courses used to satisfy the major requirements.
4. Professional Writing - Public Relations: requires ENG 270 Basic News Writing; ENG 442 Text. Image. Desktop Production; ENG 333 The Editorial Environment; ENG 271 Human Interest Writing; ENG 339 The Creative Essay or ENG 245 Technical Writing; ENG 340 Public Relations Writing; ENG 255 Advertising. Copywriting; ENG 273 Editing & Copyediting; one other professional writing course; ENG 465 Thesis Project. Students must have an overall G.P.A. of 2.5 or better in courses used to satisfy the major requirements.
5. Professional Writing-Journalism & Freelance: requires ENG 270 Basic News Writing; ENG 442 Text, Image, Desktop Production; ENG 333 The Editorial Environment; ENG 271 Human Interest Writing; ENG 338 Writing About Specialized Subjects; ENG 335 Fact-Based Opinion Writing; ENG 273 Editing & Copyediting; two other professional writing courses; ENG 465 Thesis Project. Students must have an overall G.P.A. of 2.5 or better in courses used to satisfy the major requirements.
