Online Degrees in Therapy

Degrees in Therapy: Are you interested in a career where you can make a real, immediate difference helping other people to improve their lives? In the field of Therapy, this is exactly what you will learn to do. Unlike counseling, many areas of Therapy focus on the different physical discomforts and ailments of the body and different ways to treat them using manual skills. Therapy includes areas such as occupational therapy, rehabilitative therapy, and even alternative healing modalities like acupuncture therapy and holistic therapy. It also includes skill areas based on conventional treatment, like spa therapy and massage.

Degrees in Therapy generally focus on a practitioner's skills. In other words, when you choose a degree in Therapy, you will usually focus on the major skills that you use to help people for the rest of your career. However, this does not mean that online degrees in Therapy offer a narrow education. If you choose a shorter course of study, you can often begin your Therapy career within as little as a year or two years. If you choose a longer course of study, you can specialize your skills more and also learn about subjects that can help you run a Therapy business. The exact approach that you take will reflect your goals and personal expectations.

Therapy Degree Levels Available Online

  • Undergraduate/Graduate Certificate: 1 year to complete

  • Associate Degree: 2 years to complete

  • Bachelor's Degree: 4 years to complete

  • Master's Degree: 1-3 years to complete

  • Doctorate Degree: 4-6 years to complete

Many areas of Therapy can welcome you into the profession if you complete a one year program such as an undergraduate certificate -- most areas of Therapy do not include graduate certificates, which are sought by practitioners who have completed a bachelor's degree in the past. On the other hand, an undergraduate certificate is a terrific way to develop some of the most focused and effective skills in your area of Therapy. After completing their undergraduate certificate, many people in Therapy careers will look for an entry-level position or an internship where they can practice on clients until what they learned becomes second nature.

An associate's degree is typically presented as a two year course of study, although it can be much faster if your program offers classes that you can take over the summer. In Therapy, the purpose of going to classes for a longer period is to help you develop a better, broader grounding in Therapy skills while specializing your practice more. There are many different ways to help people in the Therapy tradition, and many different skills that you might focus on and make the center of your practice -- so this option will make sense for many students.

If you would like a strong "general" education that includes many classes not directly related to Therapy, a bachelor's degree is the perfect choice for you. In addition to an even deeper list of classes about Therapy topics, you will also have the opportunity to learn side by side with other students like you as you delve into the secrets of the sciences, arts, and humanities. Achieving a bachelor's degree usually means taking the equivalent of about two years of general education requirements. However, the investment in time and energy is usually very much worthwhile, since employers will consider bachelor's degree holders to have what it takes to make a commitment. You will also learn important decision-making and problem-solving skills that are useful in virtually any line of work.

A master's degree in Therapy is relatively unusual, as is a doctoral degree. This is because these two degrees are typically focused on research, whereas the Therapy professions are often focused on improving practice and patient outcomes. However, there are some specialized degrees available that offer you hundreds of "contact hours" in advanced methods of therapy. These may be called by many names, but are considered the equivalent of advance graduate training.

Admission Requirements

Therapy programs are similar to other kinds of academic programs in that you will have to provide a wide variety of credentials to be considered for admission:

  • High School Diploma

  • High School Transcript

  • SAT/ACT Scores

  • Letters of Recommendation

  • Personal Statements/Essays

Although high standardized test scores are not usually considered critical in many areas of Therapy, it is still a good idea to take as many standardized tests as you can and submit the scores that are above average. Your personal statement is also accorded a lot of importance.

Online Therapy vs. Traditional College Programs

Online Therapy programs align themselves closely with the traditional college programs in their field, and may be derived from traditional college programs that have been around for years. In some areas of Therapy, you will be expected to take standardized "exit exams" that might be established by the state or your local area, so programs will provide a great deal of insight on these. You will often work with the same students in each and every class, beginning and concluding your program as a team.

Tuition and Accreditation

Accreditation in Therapy is provided by a variety of different professional associations and may vary by program and specialty. Be sure to ask questions if you are not clear about your program's accreditation standards!

Tuition in online Therapy programs can range anywhere from about $2,000 a year to $10,000 per year. Larger, more establish programs will tend to be more expensive, and more advanced programs cost more than entry-level ones.

Choosing the Best Therapy Degree

As a therapist, you should expect to graduate from your degree program with all the skills that you need to get an entry-level position in your field. Good therapy programs pride themselves on a high level of job placement and a network of successful alumni who are willing to volunteer their time and effort to help you get your career started. Be sure to inquire about how many students have gone on to further study or started their own successful Therapy practice.
