Bachelor's of Information Systems

Program offered is a Bachelor.

Information Systems provides students with the knowledge and skills to be competitive in an increasingly technology-, knowledge-, and information-driven job market. Graduates of the program are prepared for a range of positions in both managerial and technical areas across the business enterprise. This program is designed for adults already in the information technology field wishing to augment existing degrees and skill sets or complete their degree, and for those looking to change careers.

The Information Systems program provides an applied approach to information systems development from the project management, process and requirements analysis, and implementation perspectives. Students will be exposed to each phase of a systems development life cycle while designing and developing a complex information system of their own, using Web and non-Web based technologies (SQL Server, Visual BASIC .NET, ASP .NET). While in the program, students gain competencies in critical thinking, communication, problem solving, analytic, and interpersonal skills. The structure of classes reinforces the importance of experiential and team-based learning. Students are teamed and work together on projects, problems and presentations both inside and outside of the classroom. Generally, one-half of class time is spent discussing a given topic in a seminar format. Students are encouraged and expected to voice their ideas and opinions and tie their learning back to their experiences. The latter half of the class is spent in a case study; teams of students work together to understand and apply the theories learned in class. Candidates for this program must have a basic understanding of computers, including knowledge of e-mail, the Internet and office productivity applications (word processing applications, spreadsheets, etc.). Good problem-solving and analytical skills are required. It is advisable, but not mandatory, to have an understanding of a structured or object-oriented programming language such as Visual Basic, Java, C, C#, or C++ prior to taking the first module. A minimum of five years of work experience is usually required, as well as two years of college coursework. Interviews are necessary for admission.
