The George Washington University
Educational Administration & Policy Studies

The George Washington University's three graduate degrees in Educational Leadership and Administration prepare practitioners in teaching or teaching-related careers for leadership roles as principals, mid-level administrators, and instructional supervisors in the nation's K-12 educational systems.

As a result of increasing shortage of school-based professionals who are prepared to move into leadership positions in schools and school districts, opportunities abound for those with graduate and advanced degrees in educational leadership. Graduates of the Educational Leadership and Administration programs at The George Washington University will be ready to meet the increasing needs and demands that await 21st Century educators.

Our expert program faculty scholars, authors, and experienced former principals, superintendents, and state educational officers bring to life in the classroom the obstacles faced by educational administrators in today's society. Our curriculum is designed to help administrators become intellectual leaders who understand curriculum and instruction, who motivate and support teachers and staff, and whose ideas will help to lead today's and tomorrow's vibrant educational community.

This education administration doctoral program prepares students for leadership responsibilities within all facets of the educational arena. This is an academically rigorous program for educational leaders who are currently in, or aspire to, leadership careers. The applicant must have adequate preparation for advanced study, including eligibility for licensure upon completion of the program. In addition, the applicant must have completed graduate work in fields prerequisite to his or her objective and comparable to that required for the degree of Master of Arts in Education and Human Development at this university. Students with a Master's degree in a field other than education may be considered for doctoral study provided that the degree and previous experience are judged relevant by the program director.

Candidates must have three years of teaching and/or administrative experience upon completion of the program. This program emphasizes the development of original research and culminates in the writing of a scholarly dissertation that reflects research skills used throughout the program and that contributes to the body of knowledge in the student's identified area of emphasis. Dissertation work is guided and supported by nationally-recognized faculty with extensive professional experience in educational administration and related fields.
