South College, formerly Knoxville Business College, has been a part of the fabric of downtown Knoxville since 1882 when Jacob T. Johnson started a branch of Nashville Business College in Knoxville, Tennessee and later renamed it Knoxville Business College. In 1900, KBC occupied part of the public library building on the corner of Gay and Vine where it boasted of a commercial department equipped with offices for the actual transaction of business in mercantile and banking lines. In 1910, KBC occupied the Cherokee Building on the corner of Church and Prince across from what is now known as Market Square. In the 1940's, KBC moved to 209 West Church - commonly referred to as the Keyhole Building - where it remained until the 1980's when it moved to North Fifth Avenue. In 2005, the institution relocated its main campus to a larger, newly renovated facility which is located on Hayfield Road. Then in 2006, the Hayfield Road campus was changed to a Learning Site as the institution completed its new main campus facility on Lonas Road.
Throughout its history South College has endeavored to meet the demands of the East Tennessee business community. In keeping with the challenges faced in the modern economy, South College transitioned from a business school to a Junior College in 1977. Under the direction of the current administration, (1989 present), the college has revolutionized its curriculum and facilities. The college no longer limits its course offerings to accounting, business, and computer related fields but also offers diversified programs in fields such as paralegal and legal studies, criminal justice, medical assisting, physical therapist assistant, nursing, radiography, nuclear medicine, pharmaceutical science, and elementary education. In January 2002, South College began offering its first Bachelor of Science degree program.
South College is proud of its heritage rooted in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and accepts the challenges of the twenty-first century. |

Admissions
General Admission Requirements
South College operates on a quarter system with terms beginning in October, January, April, and June. The college maintains the right to operate classes using compressed class calendars to meet the needs of the students.
In order to be considered for admittance to South College, the prospective student must be a high school graduate or the equivalent (GED) and achieve a satisfactory score on the entrance examination administered by the college, the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), the American College Testing exam (ACT), or meet the criteria established for acceptance as a transfer student.
Admission in good standing is granted when all general requirements are met. Where required, all documents submitted to the college become its property and will not be returned. Conditional acceptance may be granted pending the receipt of official documents required by the college. If conditional acceptance is given, the student will be allowed to register for classes for one quarter, unless an extension is granted by the Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs. The college does not admit students on a probationary basis.
Applicants (other than those admitted as transfer students) must meet one of the following score requirements:
- Obtain the specified score on the college-administered entrance examination. Score requirements for admission can be obtained from the admissions office.
- Submit a minimum SAT I combined score of 830.
- Submit a minimum ACT Assessment composite score of 17.
General admission to South College does not guarantee admission to programs in the School of Health Professions.
Students wishing to enter a program in the School of Health Professions should be aware that a prior felony conviction may restrict the individual's ability to obtain professional licensure or certification. Acceptance into a South College program does not imply or guarantee that a student will be able to obtain such licensure or certification.
Financial Aid
Financial Aid is the economic assistance available to help students meet the difference between what they can afford to pay and what it actually costs them to go to school. This economic assistance may be in the form of scholarships, grants, work-study programs, or loans.
A financial Aid package is a combination of different forms of financial aid that together make up an offer of financial assistance.
A student's ability to contribute to the cost of his or her education is determined by the use of a NEED ANALYSIS which is a consistent, systematic way of measuring the ability of a family to pay for educational costs and its eligibility to receive funds from federal and state programs. It determines the ability, not the willingness, of a student or his or her family to finance his or her education. Everyone who applies is treated fairly and equally under this system. The amount of financial aid that a student receives may not exceed his or her cost of education as established by the college.
Application Process for Financial Aid
To apply for any form of financial aid at South College, students must:
- Apply for admission to the college.
- Complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Depending upon the type of aid and the source of that aid, other documentation may also be required. A financial aid administrator is available to provide needed assistance.
For federal student financial programs offered by the U.S. Department of Education under Title IV, the student's eligibility for the Federal Pell Grant must first be determined, except for the Federal PLUS and Federal Direct PLUS loans.
