Paramedic

The Emergency Medical Services provider is an integral member of the pre-hospital team and has been trained in rescue techniques for such incidents as automobile accidents, gunshot wounds, cardiac arrest and childbirth. They often transport the patient from the emergency scene to a medical facility. Paramedics are typically sent to a scene by a 911 operator and work in close cooperation with Fire and Police departments. Once at the scene, paramedics assess the current condition and capture important information about the patient's medical history. Depending on the certification level, the paramedic will provide more or less complicated treatments, sometimes under the direction of a medical professional by radio or cellular communication. In an ambulance, paramedics work in teams of two with one driving and the other attending to the patient. Working with a medical helicopter, they are part of the flight crew, monitoring the sick or injured patient during transport to a trauma center or specialized medical facility.
