Program offered is an Associate.
The Diagnostic Medical Sonography program at Sanford-Brown is designed to prepare students to perform diagnostic quality ultrasound examinations required of a general Sonographer to include, but not be limited to, the abdomen, pelvis, pregnant female pelvis, superficial structures and segments of the vascular system. The student will have the opportunity to understand the anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology of organ systems that are scanned, recognize the Sonographic patterns of the organs, learn the protocols for a logical and thorough survey of the organs and provide accurate and technical impressions to the interpreting physician. The student will have the opportunity to learn to work effectively with other allied health care professionals, patients, and families to promote patient safety and an accurate diagnosis. Graduates of the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program should be prepared, upon graduation, to seek entry-level employment as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer. Normal completion time for the entire program is 20 months, excluding vacation periods and holidays. All academic coursework is delivered on campus. Externships are completed at an approved off-site facility.
The Diagnostic Medical Sonography program at Sanford-Brown is not accredited by the Commission for Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Graduates of the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program are encouraged, after obtaining the required additional work experience, to take the Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) exam offered by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS). The exam is voluntary but obtaining this credential does enhance employment opportunities. Graduates of Sanford Brown’s Diagnostic Medical Sonography program are eligible for the RDMS exam after acquiring the necessary experience as defined by the ARDMS after graduation. Registration requirements for taking and passing this examination are not controlled by Sanford-Brown but by outside agencies and are subject to change by the agency without notice. Therefore, Sanford-Brown cannot guarantee that graduates will be eligible to take this registration exam, or any other registration or certification exam, at all or at any specific time, regardless of their eligibility status upon enrollment.
