Diesel Service Technician program description:

SEGMENT 1: Engine Power Train Electrical & Air Condition

After completing this segment, you will be able to:

  • Name all components & explain their relationship to one another, of a class 8 tractor trailer.
  • Have a working knowledge of the proper procedure to drop & hook a trailer from the tractor.
  • Name & explain the major components & explain how they relate to one another, of a modern diesel engine. Have a working knowledge of the clutch assemble & how to adjust same.
  • Understand the operation and maintenance of a 10 speed transmission.
  • Inspect and repair the drive-line. Understand the operation & inspection of rear differentials.
  • Perform a lube oil change & complete lubrication.
  • Have a working knowledge of the electrical system.

SEGMENT 2: Preventative Maintenance Inspections Out of Service Criteria FHWA Inspections

After completing this segment, you will be able to:

  • Determine what level of maintenance inspection is to be performed
  • Discuss the drivers role in the inspection process
  • Demonstrate how the job order & inspection sheet is filled out.
  • Do a full preventative maintenance inspection
  • Determine Out of Service Criteria
  • Perform inspection both PM & Federal.
  • Explain what a Federal inspection is, & why you must do a Federal inspection.
  • Demonstrate how to perform a complete Federal inspection on day-cab.

SEGMENT 3: Truck Brake Systems

After completing this segment, you will be able to:

  • Explain the FMVSS No. 121, requiring dual air braking systems
  • Identify & explain all major components
  • Identify S-cam brakes, wedge brakes, & disc brakes
  • Differentiate brake shoe linings & types
  • Explain slack adjusters
  • Differentiate OUTBOARD & INBOARD brake drums
  • Explain Anti-lock braking system
  • Explain steering components
  • Explain the angles that effect front-end alignment
  • Explain axle alignment
  • Understand suspension systems
  • Differentiate Tires
  • Explain Fifth Wheels
