Payroll managers are responsible for supervising the accurate computation and distribution of company salaries. This area of accounting generally involves current knowledge of payroll software, federal and state payroll tax withholding laws, employee benefits allowances, personnel hiring and compensation information, and severance package guidelines. Payroll managers work closely with executive management, controllers and auditors in making budgetary recommendations that relate to hiring and layoffs, adjustments in salaries, and employee benefits administration. They may also generate payroll compilation reports for CPAs and other accountants who prepare company financial statements. Payroll management is a challenging field that requires attention to detail and diligence in keeping up with changing federal and state tax laws. A college degree in accounting and/or business management is recommended for the best jobs in this promising career field.
