Health Care Management
Offered at Denver, Colorado Springs and
Rapid City.
National
American University is introducing a new
health care management program. It is
available to adult learners who have previous
education and work experience. The program
allows a student to obtain a bachelor's
degree, built upon his/her existing education.
Many health care workers are required
to have only a year or two of education
to enter their professions. It is often
difficult for them to build upon their
existing education to obtain a bachelor's
because of the specialization of the coursework
they have taken. Often, these people find
themselves frustrated, thinking that their
only alternative is to start at the beginning
of a bachelor's program.
At the same time, after
working in their professions for a few
years, they begin to find themselves taking
on supervision and management roles associated
with their profession, but not having
any real preparation in business. Management
learning is totally experiential and the
learning curve is steep, leading to errors.
Administrators often state that these
people are ill equipped for their new
roles.
NAU's health care management
program addresses both of these needs
and concerns. Students entering the program
may transfer in their health profession
education toward completion of their bachelor's
degree. If students have taken other courses
that are required in the program such
as college algebra, speech or English
composition, they may be able to transfer
these credits as well. If needed, they
can take these courses through NAU or
other local accredited colleges or universities.
Student learning experiences through work
may also count toward college credit as
the student develops a portfolio of past
learning that will be evaluated for credit
- up to 30 hours. It is possible that
the student will only need to take the
core courses in the program but more commonly
will also need the business core identified
by NAU. The entire health care management
core can be offered in six quarters, is
50 credit hours and must be taken through
NAU.
Students will usually take
only one to two courses at a time from
the health care core over an abbreviated
time period of five to six weeks. At the
campuses, the program will be classroom
based where students attend actual classroom
facilitated sessions. Where distance is
a factor, we offer the program online
in a cohort-based accelerated format that
allows for significant interaction among
students and the facilitator of the course.
As students become familiar with this
standardized technology and their classmates,
learning is accelerated. In addition,
the business core courses that are pre-requisites
are offered in the first two terms for
those who have not taken these in advance.
The health care management
program is intended for individuals who
have been working in health care. They
have been in the field and know what goes
on in the real world of health care. They
have dealt with such things as staffing
shortages, managed care, time-management,
Joint Commission for the Accreditation
of Hospital Organizations (JCAHO), quality
improvement teams, budget adjustments,
sentinel events, proficiency testing,
equipment selection and testing, and the
daily operation of the facility. They
may not understand the reasons behind
these or their implications,
New graduates do not have
these experiences to build upon, therefore,
the program is geared towards the adult
learner. Also, with the critical shortage
of health care workers, it is important
that these new graduates enter the work
force as soon as possible to do what they
have been trained to do. They will make
better employees and students when they
return to school to enter the program
a few years later.
