In the past, Linguistics has been a field that few people considered for their degree. However, it is becoming more and more popular. All around the world, millions and millions of people are seeking ways to learn English more effectively. That means there are countless teaching and research opportunities for Linguistics students whose native language is English. Whether you want a bachelor's degree or plan to go on to a master's or even a doctoral degree, you will find many different ways to make use of your knowledge. A Linguistics degree is a ticket to exciting and fun opportunities all around the world!

Linguistics Levels Available Online

  • Undergraduate/Graduate Certificate: 1 year to complete

  • Associate Degree: 2 years to complete

  • Bachelor's Degree: 4 years to complete

  • Master's Degree: 1-3 years to complete

  • Doctorate Degree: 4-6 years to complete

An undergraduate certificate in Linguistics is usually chosen in conjunction with a bachelor's degree in a related field such as writing, English literature or teaching. An undergraduate certificate is usually a good choice if you are interested in entry-level opportunities and already have a body of knowledge that will help you succeed in the field. However, if you want to pursue advanced studies in Linguistics, you should definitely consider a bachelor's degree. A graduate certificate is pursued to specialize and advance your studies after your bachelor's degree is done.

A bachelor's degree is usually considered necessary to pursue a career in Linguistics. Linguistics is a very rich, diverse, and complex field, so getting a basic overview of all its many facets usually requires a four year degree. Whether your goal is to teach or to become a researcher, you will usually find classes that pertain to every area of interest. A bachelor's degree in Linguistics may also include a capstone project that will help you bring together everything that you've learned so far. Because of all the specialized knowledge involved, a Linguistic bachelor's degree is usually considered the only road to a master's degree in the field.

A master's degree is valuable for students who want to pursue advanced teaching and research. Usually, these degrees will focus on either the history and formation of language, language acquisition or language teaching. Language acquisition is an area that can include many other types of classes and methods: For example, you might learn about psychology or the neuroscience of learning. Linguistic master's degrees focused on teaching will allow you to learn the theory behind developing and delivering a language curriculum. The history of language is a topic pursued by advanced scholars in other fields such as history who want to decipher materials from past or extinct languages.

A doctoral degree is the most advanced level of formal academic training in Linguistics. When you achieve a doctoral degree, you will not only be an expert in your field but will also have the chance to become a university professor. Professors with a doctorate have the chance to benefit from the academic "tenure" system, which can allow them to enjoy a great deal of job security while also getting to do advanced research of their choice.

Admission Requirements

A Linguistics program admissions packet will usually include:

  • High School Diploma

  • High School Transcripts

  • SAT/ACT Scores

  • Letters of Recommendation

  • Personal Statements/Essays

While very few high schools will offer classes in Linguistics, it is a good idea to submit your complete transcripts if you have taken any advanced classes in English or any foreign language. While no particular foreign language is required for Linguistics, an understanding of a second language will help you put linguistic concepts into practice.

Online Linguistics vs. Traditional College Programs

An online Linguistics program is usually comparable to a traditional program in terms of what it offers students for study. Course materials may be offered in a traditional or multimedia format, and lectures can be written, recorded or watched by video. Sometimes, students will have the opportunities to join a chat or video call that allows them to experience a live lecture, although this is rarely required. The subjects and depth of study are usually the same.

Tuition and Accreditation

Accreditation in Linguistics is handled by a number of different organizations and associations. The most important thing is that you ensure your university as a whole is accredited. The oldest accrediting organizations in the United States are usually regional. However, there are also very specialized organizations that accredit distance learning courses like online programs.

Tuition in Linguistics can be very low or moderate. Luckily, online courses do tend to be much less expensive than traditional courses. If you seek a certificate, you can usually find one for $4,000 to $8,000. A bachelor's degree can run from about $10,000 to more than $22,000 per year.

Choosing the Best Linguistics Degree

With so many options, the best Linguistics degree is one that is tailored most closely to your professional and academic goals. Since Linguistics is a very complex subject, it should usually be taught by professors with many years of experience in the field; make sure that your program offers you contact with doctorate-holding professors. Also consider combining your studies with practical language study so that you can position yourself for a wider variety of professional opportunities in the future. If you want to go on to advanced degrees, make sure your current program is accredited!
