Interdisciplinary Studies
As the world continues to transform and move toward more complex and diversified challenges, the field of interdisciplinary studies has become increasingly vital in the search for solutions to both global and regional problems. By reaching across academic disciplines and taking what is necessary in order to promote research and find solutions, interdisciplinary studies graduates often lead the way in areas where a single discipline is simply not enough.

Interdisciplinary studies have long been the hallmark of academia and a number of the sciences, social sciences, teaching and technology fields. Graduates generally intergrate the knowledge of two or more disciplines in order to produce a new understanding that is useful in clarifying and advancing research studies, such as with AIDS or global warming.

The field of education has primarily utilized the concept of interdisciplinary studies, especially with regard to teachers who are classified by the subjects they teach, such as biological science, chemistry, mathematical & computer sciences, physics, psychology, etc. The best teachers often transcend several subject areas, even if they are locked into a single-subject focus in the classroom. For example, a history teacher may inject art, the humanities, geography, technology and sociology into one course syllabus. A physics teacher may incorporate math, geology and astronomy. The intertwining of subject areas enhances the students' understanding of the primary subject in these and similar cases.
