WHAT IT MEANS:The Information Technology Association of America has defined Information Technology (IT) as "the study, design, development, implementation, support or management of computer-based information systems, particularly software applications and computer hardware." IT is an academic discipline that affects most businesses and industries. Its progressive evolution, due to the advancement of computers and communication technology, continues to have a profound impact on our lives. One area of Information Technology is Software Applications and Programming. Computer software plays an integral role in keeping many businesses productive. Programmers can be a valuable asset to companies seeking to update existing software applications and customizing software applications for special needs. People working in this area spend much of their time writing "patches" to existing code and then testing and debugging their work. These people may also be involved in meetings with clients, managers and other team members, or preparing documentation for software. It can be high pressure, demanding work with tight deadlines and long hours-but it can also be satisfying and rewarding.

WHAT IT MEANS TO YOU:In 2002, the Information Technology Association of America projected that hiring managers expected 1.1 million technology job openings for that year, and that these managers would not be able to fill almost 600,000 of these jobs due to a shortage in qualified workers. As a software applications and programming technologist, you could help meet the demand for technically competent individuals. If you enjoy solving puzzles, are comfortable with math and enjoy working in a team setting, software applications and programming is an IT area you might like to pursue. The Software Applications and Programming program in the School of Information Technology at ITT Technical Institute teaches students how to perform tasks associated with software application development and its modification. Through classroom theory and practical applications in a laboratory environment, students are exposed to a variety of information on software scripting, programming languages, database development and other related technical subjects. This program can help graduates begin careers in a variety of entry-level positions in various fields involving IT and software applications and programming. These may include such positions as Visual Basic programmer or developer, C++ programmer or developer, Java programmer or developer, or system application developer.
