Online Degree in Health Care Management

Healthcare Education Programs: Healthcare management personnel are responsible for managing various health care facilities and organizations. Their job is to provide leadership, management, and administration for hospitals, nursing homes, health care organizations, and other health care facilities. Those that go into this line of work can be medical professionals or those who came up through other health care careers. These leaders are the ones that balance the business needs of the organization with delivering effective health care to patients and other clients.

If you want to be a part of the world of modern medicine, but do not want to work on the medical side, health care management is one way to do this. It trains you for the administrative side of the world. You will learn how medical records flow through the system. It also prepares the student to take a leadership role in this world, even without a medical degree. It is important to find the right healthcare management school to make your future a reality.

Getting a degree in health care management can begin at the undergraduate level, but most that get to this level of responsibility have graduate degrees. You can begin your path to health care management when you choose the best online degree program available. With several schools offering health care management degrees, you have your choice in where to begin your new career. Take care and find the right program for your future.

Health Care Management Degree Levels Available:

  • Undergraduate/Graduate Certificate: 1 year to complete

  • Associate Degree: 2 years to complete

  • Bachelor's Degree: 4 years to complete

  • Master's Degree: 1-3 years to complete

  • Doctorate Degree: 4-6 years to complete

Online healthcare management degrees provide students with the opportunity to gain their education and still work at the same time. Managing a busy life is easier with an online education option. You will find online degrees in health care management at the associate, bachelor's, master's, and doctorate level. All of these programs are also available in on campus settings.

The associate degree in health care management does not usually open up opportunities in medical administration. However, it does begin opening up options for students who want to eventually enter administration levels. Students at this level take classes in medical terminology, concepts in health care, management fundamentals, and software in healthcare. These courses prepare students to become care coordinators or case managers in hospital and other medical facilities.

The bachelor's degree in health care management balances the business and medical sides of the modern health care world. Students take classes on topics like marketing, economics, financial management, and managerial accounting on the business side. On the health care side, the student studies healthcare finance, healthcare resource allocation, survey of healthcare management, and ethics in health care. Most professionals with this education can enter lower levels of health care management.

The master's programs in health care management offer students the chance to specialize their education with concentrations in subjects like management, pharmacy management, and health care informatics. Students will balance business topics with specialization topics such as managed healthcare, pharmacy management, health care services, leadership in health care and strategic planning.

At the doctoral level, students are making a decision to go into research, teaching, or leadership of a health care organization. Students learn in topics like research methods, managing capital in health care systems, health care policies/strategies, and law in health care administration. Student must develop and present a dissertation to complete the programs.

Admission Requirements

To enter a health care management degree program at the undergraduate level, students must meet basic college entry requirements. First, they need a high school diploma or a GED. They need to take the ACT or SAT and pass with appropriate scores. The student may also need to provide personal recommendations and complete a personal essay or a statement of intent.

At the master's level, students need to have a bachelor's degree. The programs may require the student to teak the GRE or the GMAT and provide scores. Transcripts of all education are required along with personal recommendations. At the doctorate level, the student will need to have a master's degree and professional recommendations to enter the program.

Online Healthcare School vs. Traditional College Programs

The health care management field is not on the medical side of the equation so there is no real need for clinical hours or lab work. However, some program may require an externship before graduation. The biggest challenge online students face is the need to be independent in their studies. Students can contact instructors as needed, but it is not immediate like in a classroom. Students also do not get the interaction feeling they get with other students in a traditional setting.

The programs online and on-campus are essentially the same. The only difference is the format in which the program presents them. The diploma you get is the same as the diploma that someone attending an on campus program receives. The classes online can actually be more challenging due to the non-interactive nature of the program.

Tuition and Accreditation

The undergraduate costs vary a great deal due to school, location, and degree program. The tuition total for an associate degree can be $5,000 to $10,000 while a bachelor's program can cost $10,000 to $20,000. Master's and PhD programs can cost $10,000 or more per year. Accreditation in this field usually comes from the Commission on Accreditation Healthcare Management Education. It is important to find a program with their accreditation in place. This shows potential employers and future schools that your degree comes from a reputable school and program.
