Opportunities in the bourgeoning computer field are expected to remain favorable over the next decade, according to the US Department of Labor. Rapid advances in technology continue to make this one of the most popular career choices of the future. The specific jobs are so numerous and varied that there is something for nearly everyone -- computer scientists, computer programmers, web designers, software engineers, systems analysts, computer technicians, database administrators, information technology specialists, computer support technicians, telecommunications specialists and others.

Computer Careers

Those who wish to train for computer careers after high school should have strong math and science skills, excellent analytical ability, and disciplined study habits. For obvious reasons, artistic and creative people seem to do well in many of the computer areas, like programming and web design. But no matter what your background may be, it is important to be highly-motivated if you want to find your niche in this competitive vocation.

Training for the computer field is as diverse as the jobs themselves. And though there are a number of private computer schools that specialize in the education and preparation of computer professionals, there are also other options. Most junior colleges offer two-year associate degree programs that provide foundational and overview training in management information systems, personal computers, web design, computer programming, computer literacy, computer hardware, software proficiency (i.e. Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Publisher, etc), Unix, Dreamweaver and other facets of the computer world.

A number of self-taught computer pros have made a successful living in the computer field; but it is advisable to obtain a certificate and/or college degree in order to receive the promotions and management-level opportunities that may later be necessary for an increase in salary and responsibility. A Bachelors Degree in Computer Science is one of the most well-rounded of the degrees for employment opportunities; and the MBA with a computer emphasis, like information technology, opens the door for even more employment options.

The computer field can be a rewarding and well-paying career for those who are willing to put in the hours of training and preparation required.
