Travel and Tourism Career

A travel and tourism career offers numerous possibilities for a career in travel. A candidate must be a high school graduate or equivalent. If you speak one or more foreign languages fluently, have an affinity for world history or geography, and have a good knowledge of computer science, you could be successful in the field of travel. There's a lot of room for specialization in the travel industry. You could plan leisure or business trips for clients. You could also work exclusively on certain destinations. Agents work with the cruise industry, organize specialty trips, and are knowledgeable about special packages for tourists.

One field that has a lot of diversity for a travel and tourism career is the area of hospitality. For the person who has the motivation, personality, and skills, a management position in hospitality can provide a lucrative income. A variety of hospitality jobs are available at resorts, hotels, lodges, or inns. You could apply for a job on a cruise ship. Many resorts offer seasonal jobs in food and beverage service, guest services, or reservations and management. A job on a cruise ship doesn't offer a high salary, but for the person who wants to see the world, it can be a good opportunity.

Tour guides can have an exciting travel and tourism career if they love history, culture, and meeting people. A tour guide is responsible for making the sights they're guiding tourists through exciting and informative. They must be educated about the attractions. They may work with a travel company, at a national park, at historic landmarks, or in museums. The tour guide must be able to adapt the information to accommodate different groups of guests, according to their interests. A tour guide who works with a company accompanies the tour group throughout the tour and provides information about sights and attractions.

Another option for a travel and tourism career is to become a professional group travel organizer. A group travel organizer plans all of the details of travel for a group, including reservations, attractions to visit, and planning the time accordingly. A successful organizer knows the best type of accommodations for the group they're planning for, good restaurants, and attractions to visit based on the preferences of the group.

A travel and tourism career is great for the person who loves the outdoors and has experience in water sports including scuba diving, snorkeling, and jet skiing. Ski and snowboard instructors can work at ski resorts and schools that provide lessons. Resorts and hotels provide lessons for golf, tennis, and other sports. Experienced instructors are employed for fitness activities at onsite centers. They may operate childcare centers at resorts and plan daily activities for children based on their age group. Cruise lines employ people to provide daily activities for guests. The larger lines offer numerous activities for passengers, so a large staff is necessary. Usually, an itinerary for the day is left at passengers staterooms, and they can choose foreign language, arts and crafts, cooking, and a variety of activities. Cruise lines also employ tourism experts to accompany guests on shore excursions.
