Project Management Professional

Project Management Professional - Help Me Help YouIt's no secret that project management is an important skill to have in any sort of managerial position. Most people are content to pick up project management skills from experience as they work out their projects by trial and error, but there is a much faster way to learn these skills. You can become a project management professional and not only learn the skills and principles that make an excellent project manager, but can even advance your skills to a point where you'll be equipped and qualified to teach others how to benefit from the principles of project management as well.

The first step to becoming a project management professional is to get educated. Firsthand experience at project management is great, but without a college degree to prove that you know what you say you know, it'll be difficult to get any company to believe that you have what it takes to manage projects excellently on your own, much less teach project management skills to others. You've got to put in the time and effort to get a college degree, preferably a graduate degree such as a master's degree or a doctorate, if you want to be believable as an experienced professional project manager.

After you've earned your degree, you also want to make sure that you get some real-world experience at managing projects. When knowledge is only theoretical, you never get to hit any bumps in the road and learn how to extrapolate your theoretical knowledge into practical problem-solving. Some degree programs integrate a healthy amount of real-world experience into their course work, but, if your program doesn't, make sure to get the experience you need elsewhere. You should have at least three to five years of experience before you can expect people to believe that you are a project management professional.

If you want to actually train others in project management, then you will definitely need to earn a graduate degree. Not only will a master's or a doctorate give you an aura of respectability as a project management professional, but it will also equip you with an in-depth understanding of project management principles and techniques, from the inside out. You'll be able to easily extrapolate theory into practical solutions, and will also be experienced enough to adapt your own personal experience into a variety of different industries and situations. You'll learn how to see the forest, but you'll also have an intimate knowledge of the trees.

Pursuing a career in project management can be exciting and interesting. Unique situations requiring new applications of project management theory are popping up in just about every industry on a daily basis. Business and technology continue to move forward and, as they do, so will project management. As a project management professional, your job will be to refresh the basic principles of project management and apply them to these new situations, creating innovative new solutions all the time, continually turning the business world into an increasingly more efficient place to work.
