A LPN, or Licensed Practical Nurse, is a nurse that handles standard vitals, and well as general patient care under the direction of an RN.  For those who wish to get into the nursing field but want to do it quickly, a nurse LPN online degree is an excellent option.  There are drawbacks, such as working nights, weekends, and holidays in some cases, but the benefits can be far better.  Most full time positions offer standard employee benefits, and of course the increased compensation over flipping burgers or washing cars is a plus.

Though a few programs can take longer, and most can be completed at your own pace, generally a nurse LPN online degree will take about a year to complete.  Since the work can be done anytime and anywhere, it is possible to hold a full time job while working toward the degree.  This is a great advantage over traditional programs, and it makes obtaining a degree a reality for many who thought a degree beyond high school was never an option.   The reduced cost is also a very desirable benefit.  The flexibility allows for little or no school related child care cost, and the lack of commute saves on gas.

The course work starts out pretty general, with courses in human anatomy and physiology, as well as some instruction on how to be handle patients.  Courses in taking vitals, giving shots, reading medical machines, and other practical hands on skills come later, after the basics of the medical profession have been learned.  A medical terminology course is also usually involved.  It is of course not possible to do clinical work online, so it may be necessary to work around hospital's schedule for this in order to complete a nurse LPN online degree.   

While this is only one option, the nurse LPN online degree is a very practical choice for many.  It is relatively fast compared to some other certification programs, getting you out in the work world and making money faster, and the school work is flexible.  It is important to remember that flexible does not make unnecessary, and there may very well be certain deadlines that must be met.  The schedule is still much more controllable than traditional programs, and the payoff it priceless.
