Interior Design Online Schools

Interior design is a career choice that usually is not lacking in pursuit.  It is a vibrant, creative career that allows those involved to create beautiful homes that make others feel welcome and loved.  While talent is definitely needed, it is necessary to receive certification from a qualified program in order to practice as a professional interior designer.   The basics of interior design include lighting, color coordination, fabric coordination, and much more that may while it may come naturally to some, most everyone needs some professional training to fine tune their skills.  A top tier traditional design school will take the standard four years, but there are interior design online schools that can get you out in the work world more quickly.

One of the things that you learn at design school, whether it be a standard four year school or one of the interior design online schools is the skills necessary to pass the National Conference of Interior Design's qualifications exam.  This is necessary to become a certified professional interior designer.  Once certified, you can begin working either for yourself or for an established design company.

For some it is difficult to determine which is the better career choice, an online program or a standard four year degree.  The choice really does depend on the situation.  It is obvious that interior design online schools that do not take as much time to complete as standard programs cannot cover everything that the other programs do.  This makes it a much better option for someone who may already be practicing interior design and wishes to become a certified professional.   Many of the basics may have been learned on the job, and the key to becoming certified is fine tuning skills and passing the exam.  For someone who is starting out fresh, a more traditional design school may be the better option if possible.

If you are already practicing, you may wonder why you would bother becoming certified at all.  The answer is higher credibility and higher compensation.  Whether you pass the exam using information you learned from one of the interior design online schools or from a four year program, that certificate will make you much more credible as a designer, and enable to you charge more realistically.  It will also bring more clients your way, and as long as you offer excellent work and outstanding customer service, your income will grow from this as well.

Either way you go, it is important to do your research before choosing an interior design program.  When it comes to interior design online schools, it is important to review their reputation, accreditation, and the pass rate of the exam for their graduates.  Try to find out how their graduates do when looking for jobs, and how employees views certificates from that program.  Forums and review sites, as well as local design firms are good sources of information.  Once you find a couple of credible schools to choose from, the decision will be based on personal needs including price, scheduling, and time to complete.
