Information Technology: An Overview

Information Technology: An OverviewTechnology is a rapidly growing and changing field in this day and age. Not only in the corporate world, but in the day to day lives of people everywhere, the interactions with computers and related technology systems are becoming an everyday thing. From shopping in the grocery store to managing a manufacturing plant, information technology is what makes the country run these days. Simply put, information technology is a complete industry that is uses computers and the software that goes with computers to manage information.

Information technology in the corporate world has evolved from a one desk, one person and one computer operation into companies with entire departments filled with computers, servers and other such equipment as well as a veritable army of computer technicians and database administrators. Using an array of computers and software to process, store and retrieve reams upon reams of information is what information technology is all about. The information, the data, is everything from a company's employee information, to payroll, inventory, customer information, databases of materials, products, employee insurance information. It can be quite mind boggling to think about all the specifics that make up the data in computers these days.

All computers have a set of basic operations. This goes for every computer everywhere no matter what the primary function is. Computers at work, at the grocery, at schools, at home, wherever they may be and whatever the tasks include. Basic operations of all computers are input, processing, storage and output. These simply mean data is entered into the computer, that data is processed according to the computer software, stored in the computer and available for retrieval when asked.
There are three basic categories that are the root of information technology when it comes to overall computer operations. Everything about the systems and the data fits under one of these three categories. Each category has many facets and many varied jobs performed by people as well. Those categories are:

  • Hardware- this category includes any and all machinery and equipment, from the computers to servers to printers and the like.
  • Processing- this is where the magic happens, where reams of data are processed into storable and retrievable information where it can be accessed as needed.
  • Software- this category has the instructions, the programs that tell the computers what to do and how to accomplish the tasks at hand.

Information technology is what makes the world go around these days. When computers go down, companies and businesses scramble to get things running again as there are simply no substitutes for the roles those computer systems play. The career options and fields of interest under information technology are broad, including data administrators, computer programmers and software engineers as well as office administrators and data entry clerks. The depth of knowledge and precision of the particular job in question depends on the job description and the education and training necessary to fill that position. Training for information technology careers can be found at colleges, universities and online study programs.
