Human resources command is a division of the United States military human resources department. It was created when the personnel command and reserve personnel command blended. The department performs many of the same tasks as a traditional human resources department, except on a much larger scale. They deal with active, retired, and reserve soldiers throughout their entire careers and beyond. There are several offices around the country, so soldiers are usually within a short distance of their human resources department. This makes it easier to deal with issues that arise for career military members.
The main branch of the human resources command is now located in Fort Knox, Kentucky. The building in which it resides was named for a Lieutenant General who died in the Pentagon on September 11, 2001. The building is one of the largest in base history with more than 880,000 square feet. It will be home to more than 4,000 employees, all of which will provide human resources support to military members. The building will be the home of the Human Resource Center of Excellence, which will deal with all aspects of human resources in the military. This means from recruitment to training and benefits, the center will be the main resource for soldiers.
The human resources command Centers of Excellence is a nine center system that works with the entire Army. They focus on specific aspects of a soldier's career, but also work with specific branches within the Army. Their goal is to enhance standards of achievement through efficiency and integration. The various centers include things such as maneuver support, aviation, basic combat training, and intelligence. The area of a soldier's specialty determines which command he or she will work with during their active duty phase.
The goal of the human resources command is to help the Army move forward into the twenty-first century in regard to human resources and personnel. The command has been in action since 2003. The benefit of the command is the ability it gives soldiers to manage their career through one office. Instead of having to deal with an active duty human resources, a recruiting human resources, and then another human resources department after retirement, soldiers are able to conduct their HR business in one place. It organizes personnel and makes things much easier.
In addition to traditional human resources business, the human resources command is also responsible for the Army Career and Alumni Program, the Army Awards Program, the Wounded Warrior Project, the Army Continuing Education System, the Individual Ready Reserve Program, and the Defense Integrated Military Human Resources System. This means that many of the benefits available to soldiers during and following their military careers are handled by this human resources department. If a soldier has a desire to get information about his military career or apply for education benefits, they can begin their process in the HR command. They receive the appropriate support and direction, all from one convenient location. Instead of having to jump through hoops, as might be the case with other government organizations, the Army has guaranteed the process will be streamlined by using traditional human resources techniques.
