Medical Administrator Degree

Medical Administrator DegreeThe fast growing field of medical administration is a great opportunity for new high school graduates as well as those already in the workforce looking for a career change.  These are exciting, stable jobs with great pay and benefits, and they are in an important industry that helps people.  A medical administrator degree can open the door to a number of possibilities including medical secretary, coding specialist, or medical records technician.  This is also the type of degree that can lead to one of the work at home jobs in medical billing that are coveted by many these days.

A medical secretary does much the same work as a secretary in other fields, such as drafting letters, filing reports, and filing.  Additional training is required to learn such things as medical terminology, billing procedures, and some legal issues that are unique to the medical field.  A medical administrator degree can prepare you this type of work.  Depending on the size of the facility, a medical secretary may even transcribe a physician's notes and other tasks that are all covered under the degree.   While not necessarily glamorous, the job often pays better than a regular secretarial position due to the specialized nature of the work and education required.

Medical records technicians are responsible for the hundreds of thousands of medical records and forms generated in medical facilities each day.  They are the ones who ensure that the charts, financial records, and medical histories are in the correct place, as well and ensuring that forms are authenticated and signed.  This is a huge undertaking and requires a medical administrator degree to even get starter.  The degree prepares the student to understand not only the importance of what they will be doing, but how to learn to do it.   On the job training is still essential when it comes to this career choice.

Medical coding specialists are those responsible for preparing information for filing with insurance companies.  Insurance companies assign claims by diagnosis, and each claim has to have the correct code in order to be filed correctly.  To be a medical coding specialist you must have extensive knowledge of medical terminology to get the coding correct.  A medical administrator degree program will train students in this type of terminology and other skills to ensure they have the background knowledge they need to learn to be a successful medical coding specialist.  It is much easier to train someone who has the basic knowledge needed on the job, and medical facilities recognize this.

These are just a few examples of some of the jobs that can be had with a medical administrator degree.  There are many more, and this type of degree can be the foot in the door needed to make you more competitive in the job market.  The Department of Labor recognizes medical administration as a growing field, and jobs will continue to be on the rise.  A degree is just the ticket needed to secure your spot and get on your way in your medical administration career.
