Almost as important as choosing the right school is taking the right courses. It doesn't really matter if you get into the best school in the world. If you don't take the right classes, you will not obtain the skills and knowledge you need to be successful in your chosen career. Most degree programs will outline the course of studies you need to take in order to earn the credential. However, many of them only suggest the category of classes you need to select from, not the actually classes themselves. For those of you pursing global management studies, here are some suggestions of courses you want to be certain to take.
Communication - No global management studies program is complete without coursework in communications. In fact, you probably would not be eligible for graduation if you did not take at least one class in this area. Being able to communicate with an international audience is such an integral part of your job in global management that it must be a part of your skill set. This goes beyond knowing how to speak another language. Communication also encompasses being able to relay ideas in a way that your target audience is able to understand your meaning clearly.
Financial Management - Almost as important as being able to communicate ideas clearly is being able to manage financial assets. This is especially challenging when you are working with money in a foreign currency that then needs to be converted to the currency of your home office. Other issues that will arise in the course of your career in global management will be the evaluation of various investment opportunities in international business as well as making effective use of financial resources in the host country to maximize profit. Taking global management studies that address these issues is recommended.
Supply Chain Management - This is mostly for people who are in careers or will be in a career that requires them to handle the movement of product into, out of, and/or throughout the host country. Global management studies in this category focuses on the importance of having a good global supply chain infrastructure in place that ensures products are being distributed to the places they need to go in the most cost effective way possible. You will learn how to develop efficient processes and procedures for moving product around, tracking how much is available and where it is, and how to collaborate with people inside and outside your company to foster the most efficient system possible.
Customer Relationship Management - Because you are dealing with the customs and traditions of another culture, the customer service tactics that you use in your own country may not be appropriate for the host country. Therefore, classes that teach you how to build and maintain customer relations in other countries should be a part of your global management studies program. The last thing you want to do is inadvertently offend the very people you are trying to sell to. For more advice on how to pick the right courses for your degree, speak to an educational professional.
