With distance learning, you take your classes online and study at home. Generally, you receive a syllabus of the topics you will be studying throughout the term. Assignments are sent and returned through email. Some even allow you to take the midterm and final test at home. The obvious benefit to this set up is convenience. You can study any time of the day or night for the classes.
