General accounting is not a specialized sort of accounting. It is different from forensic accounting or legal accounting. General accounting usually involves bookkeeping and basic financial duties. Jobs that can be acquired are bookkeeping, accounts payable, and payroll jobs. Where can you find these jobs? At any company, big or small. Companies are always hiring for their accounting department. You can even make a job for yourself by becoming a consultant if working for a company isn't something that you want to do.

You can search for general accounting jobs online. That is probably the best place to look. There are many hospitals and Fortune 500 companies that are hiring for their accounting department. You may be able to find a job working in the payroll department, or in the accounts payable department. It is unlikely that you will find a job as a bookkeeper in these departments. These corporations are simply too big and they cannot possibly have their finances maintained by just one person. However, with certain corporations, such as hospitals and other healthcare facilities, you may be able to find a job within the accounting department that is similar to bookkeeping.

Since there are several places to look online for general accounting jobs, you can start with big job boards. Those places are competitive, however, so another method to get the same results is to search at individual company websites. Make a list of companies that you'd like to work for or that you know are hiring. Then go to each individual website for each company. You can find openings under "jobs" or "careers". They are usually either at the top of the page or at the very bottom. You may be required to log in to their system in order to apply for a job with the company. It is also possible to apply for more than one job in some cases, which is a benefit of applying at the website instead of on a job board.

You can find general accounting jobs through networking with individuals. Ask your friends, family or people you know if you know any company that's hiring. You may be able to find a job that way. You can also inquire directly at the human resources department of banks and similar financial institutions. Some companies still advertise in the jobs section of the local newspaper, so don't forget to look there as well.
