Many colleges and universities across the United States have wonderful forensics programs that will allow you to become highly educated as well as gain much experience that will prepare you for entering the forensics field.  It is important to choose the right school that fits your needs and that will give you the exact degree you are seeking.  However, keep in mind that there are some basic aspects of all programs dealing with forensics will most commonly have.  You just need to make sure they are accredited.  This means that once you graduate, your degree is being given by a school that is an authority on the subject you have learned which, in turn, makes you better educated.

Of course when you begin in one of the many different forensics programs you will start learning the basics.  With the beginning classes you will learn what the history of forensic science looks like and what your role will be in the future.  Also, you will learn to critically look at a crime scene and take away the most information possible.  Once you complete this type of course, you will be able to process a crime scene and properly analyze all of the evidence that you acquired.  You will be able to put all of your chemistry and biology techniques to work while spending time getting hands on experience in the lab.

Many forensics programs include a course or even two that specifically deal with fingerprints.  This is the basis of many crimes that have been closed and the criminal captured.  When fingerprinting is done correctly and in a timely manner, there will be little chance that the criminal will go free. You will learn about skin on the fingerprints, palm of the hand as well as the foot.  You will learn how to do fingerprints, classify them and about many of the new fingerprinting systems that are in use today.  You will also learn how to decipher if a print has been manipulated.

Another of the courses you will find in forensics programs is about toxicology.  This is a study about how the body deals with toxic materials.  You will put your biology knowledge to work when discovering how the body's tissues, organs and entire systems deal with substance abuse.  You will find out how different types of substances are used in crimes and have hands on experience on determining the actual substance in a person and then determining the cause of death.

All in all, with any forensics programs there will be common courses and ideas that you will be learning as well as specific courses that are reserved only for certain schools or areas of learning.  No matter what program you chose, there are openings in the workforce and your experience and expertise will hopefully put you head of all the others vying for a position.
