Forensic accounting studies prepare you for working with law enforcement agencies, officials and government programs to identify fraudulent financial transactions that may have occurred. These transactions are crimes within themselves, but can be used as evidence to link people to other types of crimes as well. Forensic accounting is an important part of law enforcement. People smuggle, embezzle and launder money all the time. Advances in technology make it easier for people to steal money from unsuspecting victims, or to exploit things and find loopholes in the law. As a forensic accountant, you will be familiar with all legalities involving finances so that you can help catch criminals.
You won't just be working for law enforcement agencies. You may be able to find a job working with the government. IRS auditors, GAO auditors and Defense Department auditors all have degrees thanks to forensic accounting studies. Even bankruptcy specialists have forensic accounting degrees, or something similar. Because of the nature of forensic accounting, accountants for this field are in very high demand. Your education in forensic accounting will prepare to you to enter fields that you never thought needed accounting experts. You will be instructed on fundamentals of forensic accounting, ethics, and in most cases you will be required to obtain your CPA (certified public accounting) certification before entering this field.
Forensic accounting studies will instruct you on exactly what is legal and what is illegal as far as financial transactions are concerned. They will also instruct you on how to handle gray areas that you may run across from time to time. You will also be familiar with any electronic or computerized programs and equipment that you will need in order to get your job done. You will also learn auditing fundamentals and techniques, so that you can properly analyze financial statements, like bank and credit statements.
You'll have to take several different types of classes and learn several types of financial fields in order to be successful in forensic accounting studies. You will have to take marketing, business administration, economics and statistics classes, as well as general finance and accounting classes. The marketing classes come in handy if you are employed by a loss prevention department at a company. Economics and statistics are necessary in order to study the patterns of dishonesty when jobs become scarce, and to be able to be familiar with statistics you need to be successful at your job.
