Sales and Marketing Manager - In larger event management companies, there is a person who goes out and speaks to prospective clients to convince them to use the company's services. They use a variety of sales tactics to find clients and get them started in the sales process. This includes cold calling, going to networking events, sending out sales letters, and even using internet resources. The salesperson also works out the details of the event with the client, draws up the contract, and collects the required down payment. They usually also follow up with the client after the even to ensure everything was satisfactory.

Office Support - Although not directly involved in the event planning or sales process, the office support team is still an integral part of event management companies. They often interface with the client to ensure they get to right department, manage and organize paperwork, and generally keep the office moving smoothly. This is often the starting position of many people who are interested in getting into the party planning field. The job you ultimately get will depend a lot on your education and experience. You should definitely work towards obtaining a degree in event planning if you want to have a career in the industry.

Taking classes and getting a certificate or degree will better prepare you for your job. You are also more likely to obtain a position with event management companies if your resume shows you took the time to invest in your education in the industry. Many schools have night and weekend classes so you can complete the requirements of your degree even if you are currently working.
