One of the most popular careers that many students decide to pursue is a job as an engineer.  Becoming an engineer is a goal that comes with many options and in a wide variety of specialties.  Engineers work in many ways within our society.  There is a wide selection of specialties in the field from computers to the environment and this makes the field an exciting one to be involved in.  For those with engineering technology degrees, jobs are expected to continue to be plentiful just as they have been in the past.  In addition, those who have degrees in engineering usually find a job with the highest starting salaries of all other degrees that one can attain.

With an engineering technology degree, one can find jobs in many different areas of private and public business.  Engineers are used in private companies, public companies, by the government, in the armed forces and in many other areas as well.  There are many facets to the work of an engineer.  They are not only the ones who create and design the electronics, roads, buildings and a host of other items that we rely on every day, but they also set up the equipment, perform experiments and collect data on theses various applications and structures.  They also are responsible for maintaining the systems and keeping them operational.
 
In order to find an engineering technology degree job, one must first decide on the type of engineering they would like to pursue.  This decision can be based on many things.  Some may choose based on their personal interests or the areas they feel they are especially strong in.  Others may decide based on the current needs in the area of the country they are in.  Some of the most popular areas engineers work in are aerospace, biomedical, civil, chemical, computers, electrical, environmental, industrial, mechanical, nuclear, and petroleum engineering. 

For the most part every type of specialty will require some basic courses to be studied in order for one to achieve the engineering technology degree one needs for a job.  Classes in science, mathematics, physics, and engineering principles are generally in the curriculum for most degrees in engineering.  In addition, depending on one's specialty, there will be additional classes that will be needed as well.  Most entry-level engineering positions require a person to have at least a bachelor's degree, while some research positions require a master's degree.  There are positions in engineering as a technologist or technician and these positions may only require an associate's degree.

Students who are looking to achieve an engineering technology degree will find the jobs they qualify can be quite varied.  Some positions require degrees to be specialized whereas others do not.  Some employers like more versatility so that as technology advances their employees will have a more diverse background and can move into new fields with more ease.  In today's job market the top engineering positions are in petroleum, chemical, mining and computer engineering.  These positions can change as new specialties are created or take on new meaning.  One thing remains though engineers are always needed.
