What Do You Need Before You Join an Electrician Union?

What do you need to do before you join an electrician union? First, you need to find a program that teaches you to be an electrician. Electricians need to know more than how to pull wires through the wall and hook it up to a receptacle. They need to understand the way electricity works. Electricity can be dangerous if the electrician does not handle it properly. The electrician must know how to construct conduit and install it properly. He or she must also know how to read an electrical blueprint and setup the circuits appropriately. They also learn how to hook structures up to the power grid.

Second, you need to find a program that works within the National Electrical Code guidelines. The vast majority of electrician union training works within this code. It means learning the acceptable means of running wires and setting up conduit. It also means knowing the basics of spacing and the methods of setting up circuits. You will need to learn how to setup a panel box and where it's acceptable. This is all part of a good training program. You need to find a program that meets these basic requirements.

Third, you need to complete the program. You found the program. You need to enroll and start learning the basics. As you progress through the training, you will start putting basic building blocks together so you can deal with electricity safely and sanely. You will take classes in how electricity works and how to handle it in different configurations. You will learn how to read blueprints and set up electrical circuits as the blueprint designates. You will learn how to bring circuits safely into a panel. You will learn how to hook a panel into a main. All of this comes as part of training for electrician union jobs.

Fourth, you will need to apprentice with an experienced electrician. Many states offer a license that allows you to work under direct supervision. You will likely work as a journeyman or a trainee until you meet the state's experience and education requirements to obtain your electrician's license. It can take a year or two for that to happen. While getting your online degree, you can start working with an electrician. It is also a good way to get in with the electrician union in the area. All of this is part of preparing for becoming a member.

Finally, you can become a member of the electrician union. You have the training. You have your license. You have worked with an experienced electrician. At that point, most unions will welcome you into their ranks. Do not expect to be the top dog in the heap for awhile. Yet, you will still be a solid member at that time. Your work to get training and licensing will pay off. If you make the right moves and use your head, it can happen faster than you might expect. Find a program and get your new career on track today.
