Education Administration and Marketing

Education Administration and Marketing - Career OpportunitiesThere are two types of careers in education marketing. The first involves actively marketing educational products such as books, software or courses. The second involves teaching in an area of marketing, primarily at the middle school, high school or college level. For students interested in pursuing a career in education administration and marketing, the most traditional educational path involves training to become a professional teacher.

First, a career in education administration and marketing will allow individuals to work as teachers in grades 9 through 12. They can work in public, private or parochial schools. They can teach a variety of courses and are usually not restricted to just marketing classes. These can include computer applications, e-commerce, travel and tourism, business law and even accounting. They can also work in school based enterprises or cooperative education.  These teachers usually plan time in their schedule that allows them to be involved in the local business community.  In addition, these teachers commonly act as advisers for the local DECA, an organization for student marketers, and FBLA, the Future Business Leaders of America. They can assist with electing student officers, organizing various committees, leading club meetings, arranging different social events or field trips and leadership development among the students. Both of these organizations also have competitive events and educational conferences for students at the local, state and national levels.

A career in education administration and marketing will also create opportunities to teach at the middle school or junior high level. In this environment, they can teach courses such as business technology, keyboarding and computer classes. These teachers can also counsel students as they begin to think about future plans and possible career paths after graduation. Some schools even offer courses that focus on critical thinking skills, communication techniques, problem solving, leadership, and creative thinking skills.

While receiving their college education, individuals pursuing a career in education administration and marketing will need to take courses that include occupational education, curriculum and methods of business, administration, marketing education, reading, tutoring of adolescents and even psychology. Through their education these students will develop skills in instructing, planning, directing, critical thinking, communication, organization, interpreting, analyzing and explaining. Additional skills and traits required for this type of career include patience, flexibility and creativity. These classes and skills will help them to become successful teachers.

Career related experience is encouraged for students pursing education administration and marketing jobs. This can include student teaching, an internship, a summer job or even a co-op. Student teaching is often a requirement for this type of education and is usually completed in the junior or senior semesters. Co-op is a program that alternates paid work and schooling to provide real world experience for students. An internship is not always a requirement but can be a wonderful way to gain practice working in the marketing field and boost a resume. Finally, a summer job working with children is another great way to gain experience and can include positions such as a camp counselor or youth activity coordinator.
