Customer Service Jobs - Experience Needed, What to Expect, and the Projected OutlookCustomer service jobs are available within nearly every kind of organization.  Staff members are attributed with the best qualities to ensure that excellent customer care is extended to every valued patron of the business.  Ideal customer service personnel have natural abilities to communicate effectively, reason, problem solve, and work well with people.  Along with the natural skills required by such a position, customer service jobs often require applicants to have some education and training to their name.  Work experience and on-the-job training are both important for the success of customer service representatives as well.

If you are interested in filling customer service jobs after high school, you should take classes like keyboarding, computer applications, and a foreign language while still in high school to help you build your resume and needed skills.  In college you can take courses like office support, hospitality management, and insurance.  There are also specific customer service programs available at the collegiate level.  Nearly half of all employees in customer service jobs have attended some college, including earning a diploma or associate's degree in customer service or another field.  About a third find work with only their high school degree, but your chances of employment are improved if you have some college experience as well.

The wages earned by people working in customer service jobs varies highly.  It depends on the kind of employer the worker seeks and the level of responsibility they are charged with.  If you are employed by a large company, you may be given full-time benefits like health insurance, a retirement plan, paid vacation, and sick leave.  You also have the opportunity for bonuses based on increased sales you provide for the company based on your good customer service skills.  Some of the most prominent employers of customer service representatives offering these benefits are banks and credit unions, insurance companies, telephone call centers, and temporary worker agencies.

The working conditions for customer service representatives are generally in an office with a desk and a computer for your use.  You will work one-on-one with customers on a daily basis by answering questions, solving problems, and being generally social with patrons with the hopes of building a relationship with them.  Typically, customer service jobs require you to answer phones, enter data on the computer, and write communicative emails.  It is important that you can sit comfortably for long periods of time without your lower back or stomach muscles getting tired.  To help you gain qualifications for customer service jobs, you should seek relevant training.

As far as the outlook for customer service jobs is concerned, it has been projected that these kinds of jobs will continue to be in high demand as the need for quality customer service representatives continues to soar.  In 2009, 2.2 million customer service representatives were hired in the U.S.  By 2019, the employment outlook is expected to excel by 24.8%, reaching more than 2.7 million employees in this category of work.  That means getting an education in the field and looking for customer service jobs could benefit you greatly during these tougher-than-average economic times.
