You will need to act quickly if you want to take advantage of the booming computer networks industry. Although you will not need a master's degree to start a career in computer networking, you should at least have a bachelor's degree in computer networks or a related field. Many colleges do not yet offer a computer networks major, but you can choose to major in computer science, information technology, electrical and computer engineering, communications science, computer information systems, or telecommunications. These degrees will give you access to a variety of careers. You can become a Network Administrator, Network Engineer, Network Programmer, Network Technician, or a Network Manager. Be aware that these jobs pay well, but also have many responsibilities.

Even if you have a computer networks major, you probably will not start as a Network Administrator. This job features an intimidating list of responsibilities. You will be responsible for configuring both LANs (Local Area Networks) and WANs (Wide Area Networks), helping customers if necessary, maintaining network security, configuring routers and switches, making sure that firewalls work as they should, and evaluating third-party tools. Companies expect their Network Engineers to have an intimate knowledge of every aspect of their computer system.

Network Engineers focus on emergencies and troubleshooting rather than daily maintenance. Many companies combine the duties of Network Engineers and Network Administrators, so you will have to ask what your responsibilities are before you start the position. Any computer networks major will have access to this position. You will perform system upgrades, test new tools, and maintain security. Many of these tasks will interfere with the computer system if performed during the day, so you might find yourself working odd hours. Some Network Engineers work graveyard shifts, while others are frequently on call. You will need to be ready to respond to computer problems at any moment.

If you have a computer networks major, you might start out as a Network Technician or Service Technician as they are frequently called. Technicians concentrate on a specific type of hardware or product, rather than a whole computer system. You will not need to perform daily maintenance, but you will need to help customers when things go wrong. Technicians will perform system upgrades, provide customer support, and provide emergency troubleshooting help. Many technicians travel regularly to assist customers. Your day-to-day routine will never be the same. This job requires creativity, problem-solving skills, and good customer service.

Lastly, you can choose to be a Network Programmer or a Network Manager. A computer networks major might choose Network Programmer as an entry-level position. Programmers are responsible for creating scripts and programs that analyze the network. You will need to test the network frequently to make sure that everything is working properly. Network Managers, or Information Systems Managers, oversee the duties of Programmers, Engineers, and Administrators. Managers focus on strategy and long-range planning. Their duties are mostly administrative and supervisory, rather than hands-on. You will need years of experience in the field to become a Network Manager.
