You will have an easier time finding a job if you have an associate's or bachelor's degree in addition to certification or on-the-job computer forensics training.

Your computer forensics training should start with a college-level education. Although some jobs do not require a college degree, associate's and bachelor's degrees are common requirements these days. A two-year associate's degree will be all you need for most entry-level positions. Although many colleges do not offer degrees in computer forensics, you can still get a job in this field with a degree in a related field. While attending college, you should take courses that will help you in your future career. Try taking courses in investigative techniques, software engineering, presenting digital evidence at trial, study of internet crimes against children, network security intrusion and detection, advanced file system recovery, and incident handling. You should also take some business and law courses even if your degree does not require them. A good background in management and law will open doors for you if you choose to pursue a career in this field. Additional computer forensics training might take a variety of forms, depending on your degree.

An associate's degree in computer forensics will require an internship before graduation. This degree will allow you to pursue entry-level positions in your field. A bachelor's degree will give you a more comprehensive education, but also requires an internship. Many colleges that offer this degree will require a number of economics, statistics, and technical writing courses. After graduation, you might consider taking a certification course if you need additional computer forensics training. You will not need a master's degree if you are just getting started in this field.

Some jobs might require a certification from the International Society of Forensic Computer Examiners. This certification will allow you to become a Certified Computer Examiner and can open many doors. IACIS, the International Association of Computer Investigative Specialists, also offers several certification and computer forensics training programs. These certification programs generally require ten courses or less to complete. Certification courses are also appropriate for people who hold a degree in a related field but require some additional training before they can become computer forensic investigators. While these programs will prepare you for your new career, you should also take courses that cover cryptology, UNIX, NT, and reverse software engineering.
