A child psychologist is a psychologist that specializes in working with children. Psychology is the study of human behavior and the human mind. There are many subfields and specializations for psychology. Psychologists work in a number of institutions and even in their own private practice. A child psychologist education is for those people with an extreme amount of patience. They will be dealing with children with emotional problems so they will also need to be caring, understanding, and genuinely concerned about the well-being of the child. One of the first key factors to obtaining a child psychology education is experience.

Because of the nature of their work having experience with children will be a huge benefit for a child psychology education. This experience is obtained by people who have their own children or people that work very closely with them such as daycare workers, and teachers. You can also gain experience by babysitting, volunteering at churches, boys or girls clubs, and mentoring. Simply do some research and look for things in your area because there is a wide range of opportunities for a person to get experience working with children. You need to know how to effectively communicate with a child for this line of work.

If you think this career is right for you then you need to get a child psychology education. You can start by taking some child development classes in high school. Babysitting, volunteering, and mentoring are ways to gain experience. After high school you should enroll in college and major in psychology. This will teach you the basic concepts of psychology and by picking a concentration, minor, or specialization you will be preparing for the area of psychology you would like to work in. The educational requirements do not stop there.

The next step is a Master's degree and then a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Doctor of Psychology (PsyD), or a Doctor of Education (EdD) degree. With a child psychology education you can work as an industrial psychologist, counseling psychologist, and a school psychologist with a Master's degree but that is the minimum requirement. Any type of private practice in the field of psychology will require a doctoral degree and it will also require the person to become licensed in the state they plan to open their practice in. Psychologists can work as teachers, researchers, in colleges or universities, hospitals, and a number of other institutions and a wide variety of settings.

Getting a child psychology education will also increase your income level a great deal depending on the location, experience, and degree obtained. Private practice income could be higher or lower than an average salary of psychologist because you set your rate. One thing is for certain about working in this career field. Children are fragile and they need people that will nurture and care for them and contribute to their mental well-being. This job requires that patience and understanding person that can communicate effectively with children. Children need to be able to trust you so they will open up to you in order to get the help they need.
