In child psychology college the term psychology is the scientific study of the human mind and human behavior. A person that takes a great interest and cares a great deal for children would do very well in child psychology school. A person that would like to become a child psychologist must remember that they will be dealing with children that have emotional problems. This means that they will need to be understanding, patient, caring, and compassionate. They must also be willing to work as part of a team because psychologists do not prescribe medication so they will need to consult and work with physicians, as well as family members of the child. If a person plans on working in private practice, they will need to attend a child psychology school to obtain a doctorate degree. Depending on their personal career goals, they should choose a PhD or Doctor of Philosophy degree, a PsyD or Doctor of Psychology degree, or an EdD, which allows them to practice in educational fields. They can expect to attend college for two to four years as well as participate in an intensive internship. If planning on working in private practice or in the educational system, each state requires a psychologist to be licensed. Once a person has their license, they can work in any field of psychology they prefer.
Earning a degree at a child psychology school will give graduates to work in a wide variety of institutions and settings. They can work at a university, community college, or professional school doing research or teaching. They may also work as a child counseling psychologist in a community agency or hospital. They can work in school districts or even choose to go into private practice. Child psychologist can work anywhere that children may need their help, and there will always be a need for those loving, patient, and devoted enough to ensure the well-being of a child that needs their services.
