Child care management is a course of study that allows students to prepare to run their own child care facilities. Many parents cannot care for their children all the time and require qualified and trustworthy child care facilities. The more training and credentials the provider has, the better. From the standpoint of the parent or guardian, the people they leave their children with must be as good as or better than the parents themselves. Some education and training in child care can put students in a place to be very competitive in child care.

Most child care education is offered at community college settings and sometimes at career institutes or online. Training may result in a certificate or an associate degree. Some programs will include state licensure, but some will not. In most states, formal education is not a requirement for receiving a license to care for children. Child care management majors have the benefit over those who choose to get licensed without as much training. A major in child care will include classes in child psychology and development, educational theories, children's health, and business management. This training is far beyond what most state licenses will require.

Child care management majors will spend considerable time working with children in day care, preschool, and other settings. Experience is very important in gaining an education in child care. A knowledge of legal issues, child abuse signs, and discipline are all part of a child care major. Students in child care possess great capacity for creativity and understanding of the needs of children. They are able to get on their level and reach them. Child development is a large part of knowing how to do this. Studies of development start at the prenatal level and progress through adolescence. Children do much changing in a short period of time and care providers are always aware of that.

Most child care management majors will also receive training in business management. Many students will go on to open their own facilities. Not only do they need to understand the needs of children, but they must also understand how to run a business. They will take classes in bookkeeping, legal issues, budgeting and many other business topics specific to child care facilities. Excellent care givers need to be trained in business because it is something the likely will have to do, but don't have natural skill for.

Students should carefully assess any program they consider becoming a part of. It is always helpful to have career goals in mind so that a program can be selected that will prepare the student for their future. Some programs will emphasize certain topics over others and it is a waste of time if this is not what the student wants. Some programs will emphasize day care over preschool or vice versa. Students should have a good idea of what area they would like to specialize in. Child care is a very demanding but rewarding career choice. A little training can go a long way in ensuring success.
