Accounting degree studies seek to prepare students for most any task or situation they are likely to encounter in the accounting field. What is surprising to many students is the vast array of job roles a degree in accounting prepares them for, beyond basics like tax preparation. Audit accounting jobs are the stereotypical accounting jobs most people associate with accounting degrees. While tax season can be extremely hectic in an accounting practice, once tax season ends, business often drops off. Many will hire on extra help only during peak demand times, but then let their help go as business slows. With less demand for their services, accountants with a good head for business find other services and products to offer customers during these slower seasons.

Private accounting can be a good career and the pay can be substantial, depending on the company's size, human resource budget, and accounting needs. Many private accountants have their own place of business and provide services for only a handful of small businesses and private clients. Private accounting is one of those audit accounting jobs where if you have good organizational skills than it will make your job even easier. However, no matter how easy the job may seem is it a full time job with clients continuously demanding and expecting your undivided attention when it comes to their business finances and bookkeeping.

In terms of governmental audit accounting jobs, government accountants manage auditing duties for federal, state, and local governments. Governmental accounting means you have to work to monitor all financial transactions, fund allocations, and associated reporting. Generally speaking, the larger the branch of government, the more job opportunities for professional accountants are available. In terms of working for the federal government, there are positions at the IRS, the Treasury, as well as within select government departments and agencies. Government positions, whether in accounting or elsewhere, are notorious for job security, benefits, and above average pay.

Other audit accounting jobs include internal auditors for large corporations. Internal auditors are the ones that are responsible for the implementation and enforcement of a company's organizational goals and objectives in terms of financial activities. Internal auditors monitor the use of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP,) verify information, and help implement loss prevention strategies. Internal auditors are often one member of a larger team of auditors. Corporate financial records simply have too much data for one auditor to manage. However, by working hard and being a valuable contributor to the team, advancement opportunities are available that can lead to more responsibilities, higher pay, and more job satisfaction.
