In the last several decades, the marriage of artistic design and technology has spurred the innovative growth of newly-defined career fields. As personal computers began to slowly infiltrate the average American household in the early 1980's, a quiet undercurrent of artistic inventiveness seeped into the fabric of the technological world, blazing a path for talented and skilled professionals who could use, expand and integrate computer intelligence into multiple disciplines, while simultaneously promoting better efficiency in those fields.

Among the careers birthed by this computer revolution were those that utilized talented artists and designers in ways that were foreign at the time. As artistic students studied and grasped the intricacies of computer hardware and programming, they began to produce software to complement their fields. A snowball effect opened the doors of opportunity for computer artists to flourish in animation, filmmaking, graphic arts and games. Web development became particularly lucrative as the World Wide Web gained momentum; and businesses found it necessary to create a marketing presence on the Internet in order to keep pace with their competitors. New 'web-only' businesses popped up, creating and supporting an entire cottage industry of computer professionals.

The term "digital" refers to the transformation of voice, music and video information into numerical form in order to enable its movement along wired or wireless transmission paths to its final destinations. The data is binary, and utilizes unique combinations of 0s and 1s that are electronically manipulated to protect the integrity of the information being transmitted. Production includes most professions that use computers to create efficient and computer-friendly compositions of computer software, web pages, interactive media (audio and video), game systems & games, graphic arts, animation, CAD in fashion and architecture, auxiliary computer devices and more.

This field continues its metamorphosis as new careers are added due to emerging technological discoveries. Students who choose to pursue an online degree will graduate with an understanding of computers and how they are used in their specific area of interest. They will learn basic and advanced computer skills, along with varying degrees of fine arts or creative techniques. Students will work with the software that defines their particular industry. For example, web developers will learn how to use web development software; and animators will learn the ins and outs of animation software. Yet several fields require programming knowledge in order to create the software that others will use. For example, those who build games and applications for MP3 players and multimedia phones require technical knowledge of current programming languages. An online degree may also provide the skills for graduates to work for themselves, just as many have used such skills to create income from games or multimedia phone applications. Some of these industrious programmers have been able to generate a steady stream of income from ideas they were able to bring to fruition through their programming abilities. But many graduates continue to find their niche in working in for others in areas of government, education and business.
