Successful organizations recognize the importance of high-performance database management systems. The effective operation of these data resources offers strategic advantages in the competitive marketplace. Specialized skills are required to design, configure, and manage these data warehouses. The database systems concentration can provide the skills necessary to effectively analyze, design, implement and optimize complex data repositories. Students learn to transform data into powerful information systems for business. According to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics, these skills are increasingly important to organizations and "employment of database administrators is expected to grow by 20 percent from 2008 to 2018" at the national level.* Local employment markets will, of course, vary.

This program is designed and instructed by computer professionals to teach students to:

• Apply effective leadership strategies and skills
• Conduct professional, scholarly, applied research
• Use analytical and critical thinking skills for effective decision analysis and problem solving
• Acquire a breadth of knowledge and understanding of the field of computer science
• Critically evaluate the issues that affect the development and modification of complex software systems
• Gain an understanding of operating systems and networking
• Acquire knowledge of computer system architecture and the software system engineering process
• Identify, describe and analyze database models, database languages, and database management systems
• Use state-of-the-practice techniques to design and implement databases and data warehouses to support an organization’s information needs
• Apply database administration skills to maintain optimized performance of database applications, databases, and data warehouses
• Analyze the implications and effects on design, implementation, use, and performance of distributing a database across multiple nodes
• Analyze risks, develop security policies, and apply effective techniques to maintain the integrity and security of an organization's databases
