Tourism Co-Op Certificate

Program offered is a Certificate.

Full-time(morning and afternoon classes 3 days per week)

24 weeks - 480 hours - 6 months

12 weeks in class plus 240 hours in paid Co-op work experience hours

This entry level tourism program is designed for students wishing to enter the tourism industry and work with airlines, hotels, travel agencies, cruise lines and a variety of other tourism related positions. Students combine 12 weeks of in class sessions with 240 hours of paid co-op work experience in a tourism company. Canadian Tourism College is pleased to organize the on the job training for the students. Students may wish to combine some co-op hours while taking classes at CTC or wait until all the in class training is complete and then commence the 240 hour work experience within a 12 week period.

This training program usually includes the first four courses listed; Fundamentals of Travel and Tourism, World Destinations Geography, Domestic Tariff and Ticketing and SABRE GDS training (airline reservations). The program length will be 12 weeks in length and may vary slilghtly depending on start and end dates. In some cases the courses included in the program may vary due to the schedule and may contain a combination of the above noted courses and a combination of International Tariff & Ticketing, Trans border Ticketing, Accounting for the Tourism Industry, Professional Selling Skills, Service Across Cultures, Career Days, or Career Development.

Fundamentals of Travel and Tourism

Cruises, air charters, motor coach tours, car rentals, package tours, domestic and international rail, travel documentation, travel agencies & tour operators. This course will provide students with thorough knowledge of the Travel & Tourism industry. This extensive training will include research techniques, business communication & correspondence, and interpreting paper & Internet brochures.

World Destinations Geography

The students will learn about attractions, culture, history, general facts, capitals, climate, currency, cuisine, airlines and geography. This Tourism geography course will provide students with information on how to sell a destination correctly. Students will do research, discuss, present and discover popular tourist destinations and why travellers wish to visit these places.

Domestic Tariff and Ticketing

The College will teach International Air Transport Association (IATA) airline terminology, airfare calculation, IATA Document Preparation and Domestic IATA Applications. This course will provide students with up-to-date information from Billing Settlement Plan (BSP) accounting perspective and how to process tickets once they are sold.

SABRE Global Distribution System (GDS) Training

This course will provide students with airline reservation skills within the American Airlines SABRE computer reservation system. Students will learn how to research flights, make reservations, create passenger name records, send special messages like wheel chair assistance requirements or specific dietary meal requests. In an Instructor lead learning environment and using an individual workstation, students will gain the confidence to work in a reservation environment like a travel agency, a tour company or at the airlines.

The above noted combination of courses can complete the Tourism Certificate program with CTC. Due to scheduling and choice of course commencement, a combination of some of the courses listed above and below may be combined to complete the 13 to 14 week in class portion of training.

 

International Airline Tariff & Ticketing

In addition to Domestic Ticketing this course includes International terminology, destinations, international tariffs and fare calculations.

Professional Selling Skills

Marketing strategies, selling techniques, client satisfaction strategies will be taught. This extensive sales and motivation course will provide students with sales skills specific to the Travel and Tourism industry. It will help to give students confidence when dealing with clients, passengers and customers.

Accounting for the Tourism Industry

This course provides students with information on IATA accounting procedures through their accounting arm: BSP Canada. Using procedures in accordance with IATA standards and regulations students will prepare standard traffic documents, reports and analyze the IATA/BSP process. Standard airline document processing will be taught and will include refund transactions, exchange transactions, report processing. The Domestic Tariff and Ticketing course is a pre-requisite for the course.

Tourism British Columbia's WorldHost Service Across Cultures Certificate

Service Across Cultures is a SuperHost - face-to-face workshop designed to increase front-line employees' awareness about the diverse cultures that comprise British Columbia's tourism clientele. It teaches cultural awareness - helping participants understand and empathize with customers from other cultures. It includes inter-cultural communication - providing participants with practical skills to understand and be understood by customers from other cultures. Service Across Cultures focuses on the service expectations and requirements of visitors from many of BC's most important overseas markets.

Transborder Ticketing Seminar

This one day seminar includes the types of documents required to enter the United States of America, city codes and pairs, fare types, taxes collected and classes of service that are different from Canada and Europe.

Career Days

These days are designed to assist students in making career choices by visiting various employment sites, giving an opportunity to see how they operate. Representatives from the industry may talk about the latest trends in the industry and provide insight about their hiring practices and what they look for in employees. Industry tours may include: airports, airlines, tour companies, the cruise ship terminal and hotels.

Career Development

Resume writing, electronic resumes, interview process, negotiating employment terms, image preparation and presentation and practical work experience.

This training provides students with the skills to get their career moving. Students will create an effective resume, learn how individual employers interview, what they require from prospective employees, current employment opportunities and how to access the hidden job market.

Co-op

Students will be required to complete 480 hours of paid hands-on training in a tourism related environment. To qualify for the co-op, students are required to maintain a grade of 70% or higher and a minimum attendance of 90%. Students will be evaluated at the host company and the results are recorded on the student transcript. Every attempt will be made to find a suitable host company to compliment the student's tourism training. All Co-op hours must be completed within the 24 week program period.

Students may wish to add additional certificates and seminars to compliment the Tourism Certificate Program. Please find a list of one day seminars that we recommend.

BASICS.fst Food Safety Training Certificate (similar to Food Safe level 1)

Serve Safe is the most advanced internationally recognized food hygiene training currently available. Students gain a complete understanding of food hygiene regulations and practices within the hospitality industry. All concepts of the food chain are examined in detail and a complete understanding of the responsibilities required from the management perspective. This course is offered on-line at the College.

ADVANCED.fst Food Safety Training (similar to Food Safe level 2)

Building on the principles of basic food hygiene, this course seeks to widen the food service professional's ability to set clear systems and procedures in the workplace thus complying with current legislation. Internationally recognized, this is a complete advanced food hygiene course covering in detail all aspects of the food chain and its implications to the food service provider today.

First Nations Cultural Tourism Certificate

This full day seminar provides the participant with insight into First Nation's tourism in BC. Students will learn about the First Nations culture and it's impact on tourism within BC. The seminar is held in a First Nations Long House located in North Vancouver. The session will provide information on first nation history, native terminology and the social structure within the First Nations of BC.

Assisting Travellers with Disabilities Certificate

Disabled travellers now account for a significant share of the travel market and consequently present service professionals with alternative service requirements. This one-day seminar is designed to assist service professionals in the understanding and service requirements for guests with disabilities and how to most professionally meet and exceed their needs and expectations.

WorldHost - Customers with Disabilities

This is an introductory half day seminar designed to provide service professionals with the skills and knowledge to service customers with disabilities. This provincially recognized certificate also provides practical advice and corrects language usage for serving customers with disabilities.

WorldHost - Fundamentals

This provincially recognized certificate is designed to provide service professionals with the skills and knowledge they need to provide excellent service. It also encourages participants to feel a sense of personal pride and commitment to their work in the tourism industry.

WorldHost - Sales Powered By Service

Sales Powered By Service is a three-hour SuperHost - face to face polishing workshop that supports front-line employees to be more effective sales representatives through a service focus. The seminar reviews the sales cycle and how it influences your customers' purchasing decisions, discusses the value of knowing your products/services and the needs of your customers and understanding the impact of "moments of truth." The day focuses on the benefits of selling beyond the basics.

WorldHost - Solving Problems Through Service

Solving Problems Through Service is a three-hour SuperHost - face to face polishing workshop that supports front-line employees in being effective problem solvers in their role as service providers. This workshop provides effective training tools for anyone who is dedicated to providing exceptional customer service. Presented in a highly interactive, informative and fun learning environment, participants are encouraged to take ownership of their role in influencing customers' buying process. The objectives of the workshop are: to understand the value of an anticipatory service approach; to use creative thinking in challenging situations; to say no graciously and how to apply a problem-solving approach.

WorldHost - Japanese Service Expectations

Japanese Service Expectations is a one-day SuperHost Face-to-Face workshop that helps front-line employees understand Japanese visitors, their culture and their customer service expectations. Participants learn what the Japanese expect in the way of customer service, including how to properly address visitors, key words and phrases in the Japanese language and other cultural awareness skills to better serve BC's important and growing Japanese overseas market. Upon successful completion of this seminar, students will receive a certificate of completion from Tourism British Columbia.

Emergency First Aid

First aid is now a most critical aspect of the travel, tourism and hospitality industry and is a key requirement in all recruitment phases for the hospitality professional. This one-day course includes all aspects of emergency first aid CPR B for adults, infants and children. Having current first aid training certification is a valued skill recognized by employers worldwide.

Leadership

This seminar will provide a framework for leadership and introduce students to the tools and techniques that will smooth their transition from employee to leader and show them how to lead a team, not just manage it. The seminar will cover such topics such as motivation, communication, influence, evaluating performance and personal and professional development. It will also help identify personal leadership styles to assist junior/newly appointed managers in making valuable contributions to their organization and inspiring others.

Stress Management

Learning about stress management equips the student with information about what causes stress, how it can be managed and how it can help raise or lower individual worker performance. The busy and dynamic working environment, which has now become a way of life demands optimum performance and results based evaluation. For many employees, the management of day to day stress is a key driver on under performance, sickness, and disability.

To learn, understand and mange the key drivers which cause stress to become significant, students are encouraged to learn the key concepts and understand how their individual contributions can ease and reduce stress in the workplace.
