Medical Assistant

Medical AssistantMedical assisting is a multiskilled allied health profession whose practitioners work primarily in ambulatory settings such as medical offices and clinics. Medical assistants function as members of the health care delivery team and perform administrative and clinical procedures. The clinical procedures and lab techniques include injections, EKG's, vital signs, urinalysis, phlebotomy, assisting in minor surgery and emergency situations. Front office skills include typing, transcription, word processing, patient data collection, insurance claims processing, bookkeeping and billing and collection.

Upon satisfactory completion of the training, students will be qualified to assume entry-level positions as a medical assistant performing the medical procedures, lab techniques and front office duties described above.

The Medical Assistant Program is divided into 5 - 150 hour classroom and lab instruction modules and a 160 hour externship program. Students are evaluated in all areas of professional and performance skills. Typing, transcription, word processing and computer billing are evaluated utilizing error control and speed building.

Graduates of the program will receive a certificate upon completion and are eligible to sit for the Certified Medical Assistant exam sponsored by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA).

The medical assistant is one of the most valuable members of the health care team. Classified as allied health practitioners, medical assistants can be found in doctors' offices, outpatient clinics, ambulatory facilities, and other healthcare-related businesses. Possessing numerous competencies in both front and back office procedures, medical assistants are professionals who demonstrate versatility from beginning to end of each visit and beyond.

Program Length
The daytime program is 34 weeks. The evening program is 46 weeks. Holidays and summer breaks will lengthen the completion time.
