Respiratory Therapy

Respiratory TherapyThe Respiratory Therapist applies scientific knowledge and theory to practical clinical problems of respiratory care. The Respiratory Therapist is qualified to assume primary responsibility for all respiratory care treatments, including the supervision of Respiratory Therapy Technicians. Under the supervision of a physician, the Respiratory Therapist may be required to exercise considerable independent clinical judgment in the care of respiratory patients. At Apollo College, the knowledge and skills needed by respiratory therapists are taught through formal lecture, laboratory, and clinical instruction. The program is designed to train entry level respiratory therapists who meet nationally accepted standards for practitioners in the field. Consequently, in order to meet this standard, students must not only fulfill all the program's course work and clinical practice requirements, but must also: Pass the secured certified Respiratory Therapist exam prior to going on clinical practice assignments, and Pass the secured registry written examination prior to graduation. Admission to the Respiratory Therapist program requires: A high school diploma or equivalency (GED), Passing an entrance evaluation, and A personal interview with the program Director or Clinical Director of the Respiratory Therapist program. Prospective students are encouraged to accompany the clinical director in visiting a clinical site where they may observe Respiratory Therapists and Respiratory Therapist students at work.
